Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Valentine’s Day comes early in 87-85 overtime win at Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – First, senior Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) found a seam, drove the lane and hit a layup as time expired to send the game to overtime, then caught a high lob and hit the game-winning layup to give the Lycoming College men's basketball team an 87-85 non-conference win over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday, Jan. 3, at Sorrentino Gymnasium.

In between, he also became the 35th player in Lycoming's program history to reach 1,000 career points, reaching the mark in 88 games. In all, Valentine tied his career-high with 29 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists to lead the Warriors (4-7 overall) against the Flying Dutchmen (2-9 overall).

Sophomore Princeton Layton (Katy, Texas/Katy Paetow) posted 24 points, nine rebounds and two assists and first-year Noa'Sosa Friedman (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) added 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. First-year Elisha Slabach (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) posted nine points and three assists and junior Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) posted eight points and two steals.

Valentine scored six of the team's 11 points in overtime, starting the period with a pair of layups to give Lycoming an 80-76 lead, crossing the 1,000-point mark with his layup with 3:01 left.

The Dutchmen closed within a point with 1:29 left before Friedman drove the lane for a layup to make it 84-81 with 1:05 left. A four-point play from Jason Penn tied the game with 31 seconds left. The Warriors called timeout with 14 seconds left to set up the final play, where Friedman lifted a lob pass inside for Valentine, who tipped it in with 2.3 seconds left. A last-second look by Lebanon Valley flew off the side of the rim, giving Lycoming the win.

Lebanon Valley led, 76-72, with 22 seconds left in regulation, but Friedman got an offensive rebound and put it back in with 10 seconds left before the Warriors were forced to foul. When Lebanon Valley missed the front end of the 1-and-1 on the resulting foul, the Warriors called timeout on the rebound. A long pass inbounds ensured the Warriors had all 5.7 seconds left to work with and they needed all of it, as Valentine found a seam and beat three defenders to the basket with his game-tying layup as the clock expired, tying the game at 76.

Neither team led by more than seven in the second half after Lebanon Valley led 36-33 at halftime. That Lebanon Valley lead came at 52-45 with 12:04 left after Penn hit a 3-pointer, but four and a half minutes later, the Warriors led by four at 60-56 after a layup from Valentine. The Dutchmen took a four-point lead three more times in the closing minutes with the Warriors rallying to tie the game each time, once on a fastbreak dunk from Layton to tie the game at 72 with 2:03 left and the last on Valentine's last-second drive.

Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Lycoming rallied and took a 31-28 lead with 2:51 left off a fastbreak layup from Layton before Lebanon Valley finished the half on an 8-2 run to lead 36-33 at the break.

Penn led the Dutchmen with 22 points and five assists. Phil Unangst added 13 points and 11 rebounds, Brandy Demarcus added 13 points and three steals and Michael Main also added 11 points.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when they host Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action at 5 p.m., in Lamade Gym.
