Princeton Layton (Katy, Texas/Katy Paetow) and a 17-point effort from junior forward
Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) helped the Lycoming College men's basketball team stay within one possession throughout long stretches of the second half, but visiting Juniata College used timely free throws and a late surge to escape Lamade Gymnasium with a 66–59 Landmark Conference win on Wednesday night, Jan. 21.
Layton poured in 20 points on seven-of-fifteen shooting, including two 3-pointers and four made free throws, while also adding three rebounds. Pardoe delivered 17 points, fueled by three 3-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds to lead a Warrior frontcourt that helped produce a 43-38 rebounding advantage.
Senior guard
Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while junior forward
J.J. Beagle (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) added four points and eight rebounds.
Lycoming struck first, as Pardoe converted a layup on the opening possession, and the Warriors traded early threes from Pardoe and Layton to take a 8-6 edge. Juniata responded with a quick six-point run, pushing the lead to eight points with 5:51 left before the Warriors finished the half on a 7-2 run to head into the break down, 25-22.
Lycoming opened the second half with energy, as Beagle hammered home a dunk off a feed from Pardoe, and moments later Pardoe drilled a three from the left corner to even the score at 27.
Juniata responded with a 12-4 run, but the Warriors again answered with Mathis finishing inside and Friedman converting a fast‑break layup to draw within 42039 with 10:13 left, staying within a possession for the next two minutes before Juniata scored seven points in a row to lead 53-43 with 6:32 left.
Layton scored twice in the lane in the final two minutes, and his three with twenty‑four seconds left brought the Warriors within five, but Juniata closed out the final possessions at the foul line.
Jayden Bilger led the Eagles with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals and both Joe Bruce and Malcolm Griffith had 11 points.
Lycoming heads back on the road on Saturday, Jan. 24, traveling to Washington, D.C., for a 2 p.m. Landmark Conference matchup at Catholic University.
