WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Lycoming College men's basketball team hit 11 3-pointers, but the Catholic University of America, which is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll, shot 49 percent from the field in an 86-59 Landmark Conference win on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Franny Murray Court.
Lycoming (4-13, 0-10) started fast behind senior Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa.. / Mifflinburg Area), who drilled two early 3-pointers to lift the Warriors to a 10-4 lead just over three minutes in. The lead was 13-8 after Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa. / Central Mountain) buried a triple of his own at the 15:31 mark.
Catholic (13-4, 9-1) responded, though, with a 9-0 run to take the lead, en route to a 48-30 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Cardinals led by 26 early in the half before Lycoming trimmed the lead down to a dozen, closing to 67-55 on a three from junior Connor Shanahan (Chester Springs, Pa. / Downingtown East) with 5:52 left. Catholic then closed the game on a 19-4 run.
Valentine and sophomore Princeton Layton (Katy, Tex. / Katy Paetow) each led the squad with nine points, with Valentine draining a trio of three-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. Senior J.J. Beagle (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport Area) and Shanahan each added eight points, including two threes apiece. Pardoe chipped in seven points and a team-high six rebounds.
Catholic was led by CJ Ruoff, who knocked down seven threes in a 32-point performance. Matthew Gorman added 13 points and Brian Herbert notched 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Warriors will return to Lamade Gym on Wednesday, Jan. 28, for a Landmark Conference matchup against Wilkes University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
