Etown escapes with sweep over Warriors

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – A walk-off double in the first game and a game-ending flyout at the warning track with the bases loaded in the second helped the Elizabethtown College baseball team, which has appeared in three straight NCAA Championships, escape with a doubleheader sweep of Lycoming College, competing in its third season since being reinstated after a 52-absence on campus, 6-5 and 4-2, in Landmark Conference action at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium on Saturday afternoon, April 5.

In the first game, the Warriors (15-11 overall, 7-4 Landmark) built a three-run lead through the fourth inning before Elizabethtown (13-10 overall, 6-5 Landmark) was able to get a walk-off two run double from Sawyer Martin in the bottom of the ninth to sneak away with a 6-5 win.

Junior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) led off the game with a triple before scoring on a single up the middle by senior Danny DeLucas (Whittier, Calif./La Serna), who extended his hitting streak to a school-record 21 games in the process. After an error that allowed sophomore Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) moved him to second, he scored on a single to center by junior Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md./DeMatha Catholic). MacCluen scored on a sac fly from junior A.J. Llorente (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) with two outs.

After Elizabethtown closed within a run in the second, the Warriors got two more runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Sean Perkins (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) singled to lead off, moved to second when Llorente was hit by a pitch, took third on a sac bunt and scored on a groundout. Senior Evan Mok (Daly City, Calif./St. Ignatius) singled to score Llorente.

Single runs from Etown in the fourth and sixth made it a one-run game heading into the ninth when two singles set up the game-winning double.

Mok had two of Lycoming's eight hits and a RBI. David Wooley was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Martin was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI for the Blue Jays.

Justin Marraccini (1-0) earned the win for the Blue Jays with 1 1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore Grayson Rinker (Jersey Shore, Pa./Montoursville Area) (0-1) allowed three hits and two runs in 2/3 innings.

In the second game, both teams were scoreless through five before both scored two in the sixth. Two unearned runs in the seventh helped Elizabethtown hold on for the 4-2 win, despite Lycoming loading the bases in the ninth inning.

Lycoming broke through in the sixth inning when first-year Tyler Wetzel (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville Area) was hit by a pitch and Mok reached on a fielder's choice. After a sac bunt, DeLucas was walked to load the bases. An error allowed two runs to score, but the rally died with a rundown.

Etown tied the game in the bottom of the inning and two errors in the seventh helped Etown take the lead.

Lycoming, which only had one hit in the first eight innings, had three in the ninth – with MacCluen, Llorente and Perkins each singling, but a flyout ended the game.

Logan Burns (2-2) earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit, two walks and no earned runs. Connor Rible earned his sixth save, allowing one hit in 1/3 inning. Junior Rick Trapanese (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) (1-1) allowed four hits and no earned runs in 1/3 inning.

Quinten Perilli was 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI and AJ Lipscomb was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Blue Jays.

The Warriors and Blue Jays wrap up the three-game set on Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m., at Boyd Stadium.
