Lindsey’s homer lifts Warriors in split with Scranton

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Brody Lindsey (Monrovia, Md./DeMatha Catholic) hit his 10th home run of the season to put the Lycoming College baseball team ahead in the bottom of the sixth in game one and junior A.J. Llorente (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville) notched his fourth straight quality start to lead the team in a 5-3 win over the University of Scranton on Sunday afternoon, April 13, at Brandon Park. Scranton won the second game of the doubleheader, 9-3.
 
Lindsey went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBI and sophomore Sean Perkins (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) was 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run to pace the Lycoming (16-15 overall, 8-8 Landmark) offense in the game.
 
Llorente (3-2) tossed six innings, allowing eight hits and two runs in the win, striking out three. He yielded to junior Joel Inman (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional), who tossed 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, a walk and a run. He struck out two. Sophomore Grayson Rinker (Jersey Shore, Pa./Montoursville) earned hit sixth save by getting a groundout to end the game.
 
The Warriors scored first in the fourth inning, as Perkins doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Lindsey.
 
After Scranton took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, the Warriors rallied back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and senior Danny DeLucas (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) led off the inning with singles, moved 90 feet on a sacrifice and scored when Lindsey delivered his three-run homer. Sophomore Eric MacCluen (Downingtown, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Llorente each singled before a walk and a hit batter brought in the last run.
 
Scranton scored one run in the seventh, but Inman got a strikeout swinging to end a threat with a runner on third.
 
Jared Cassella led the Royals (13-12 overall, 9-6 Landmark), going 3-for-5 with a run and RBI. John DeStefano (1-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs.
 
A five-run first inning in the second game helped Scranton to the 9-3 win.
 
DeLucas and Lindsey each had two hits and a double for the Warriors, who notched nine hits in the game.
 
Llorente singled in the second inning, took third on a single by MacCluen and scored on a sac fly from senior Evan Mok (Daly City, Calif./St. Ignatius). In the fifth, Reeder walked, took third on a  single by DeLucas and scored on a sac fly from Perkins. First-year Tyler Wetzel (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) hit his first homer in the sixth.
 
After Lycoming closed within three runs, the Royals added three runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
 
John Heintzman was 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and two RBI and Jake Lopez was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI for the Royals.
 
Chris Correll (2-0) earned the win for the Royals, allowing two hits and one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Junior Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) (4-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. He walked four and struck out two.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 15, when they travel to Juniata College for a 3:30 p.m. Landmark Conference game.
