WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Senior Luke Taylor (Williamsport, Pa. / Word of Life Bible Institute) and first-year Kayvan Shams (Williamsport, Pa. / South Williamsport) each won their doubles and singles matches to lead the Lycoming College men's tennis team in a 4-3 setback against Alfred University in non-conference action on Friday afternoon, March 28, at Brandon Park.
After beginning No. 2 doubles in a three-point hole, first-years Shams and Logan Hammond (Williamsport, Pa. / Loyalsock Township) rallied to claim a 6-4 win. Sophomore Thomas Andersen (Wenonah, N.J. / Deptford Township) and Taylor also teamed up in No. 3 doubles to secure a 6-2 victory, helping Lycoming secure its first point.
Taylor won his No. 5 singles match (6-1, 6-3) against Alfred's Mark Unguarian. Shams secured a point in No. 4 singles against Alfred's Bill Tran with a 6-2 first set and a 7-5 second set.
In No. 6 singles, Andersen went into a third-set against Alfred's George Fearon, which had to be completed at the Central Pa. Tennis Center due to rainy conditions. Andersen won the first set 6-2 before falling in a tight 5-7 second set. He fell in the third set, 6-4.
Junior Josh Neidert (Reading, Pa. / Oley Valley) and senior Matthew Baldridge (Damascus, Md. / Damascus) also competed for the Warriors.
Lycoming fell to 0-9. Alfred rose to 1-5.
The Warriors return to the Brandon Park Tennis Courts on Saturday, March 29, for Landmark Conference action against Susquehanna University at 1 p.m.
