MEADVILLE, Pa.- After Allegheny College tied the game with 7:15 left in the fourth quarter, senior Joey Hoover (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) scored two goals and sophomore Brogan Wooley (Hampton, N.J. / Morris Catholic) drove another shot into the cage, leading the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team to a 10-8 victory in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, March 1, at Frank B. Fuhrer Field on Robertson Athletic Complex.
Wooley, Hoover and senior Ryan Farrell (Swedesboro, N.J. / Archmere Academy) each contributed three goals to Lycoming's total. Hoover also added two caused turnovers and picked up nine ground balls to help Lycoming's efforts. Senior Jakob Switzer (West Pittston, Pa. / Wycoming Area) snagged five ground balls and made three caused turnovers.
Allegheny kicked off the scoring in the fourth period with a goal in the second minute, which was the third goal of the day for Jack Cushwa. The Gaters' Alex Crespo closed the score within a point with 11 minutes left in play, and Cushwa came back to tie the game at seven with 7:15 on the clock. Less than 30 seconds later, Hoover drove down the field after Lycoming won the faceoff and secured a one-point lead. Wooley followed up with another goal at 3:55, bringing Lycoming to 9-7, before Hoover returned with 2:12 on the clock to drive the ball through the cage, leading to the Warriors' first win of the season.
In the second minute of the first quarter, Hoover jumped out with an unassisted goal, which earned Lycoming an early lead against Allegheny (0-2 overall). Widening Lycoming's early advantage, Wooley followed up 18 seconds later with the Warriors' second goal. Four minutes into the period, Farrell launched the Warriors' third goal after Lycoming cleared the field, bringing the score to 3-1. With 2:22 on the clock, senior Shayne Wilson (Smyrna, Del. / Smyrna) drove past Allegheny's defensive line to shoot the Warriors' fourth goal past the goalkeeper, helping maintain Lycoming's 4-1 lead into the second period.
Wooley and Farrell each added a second goal in the second period. Wooley kicked off Lycoming's scoring in the quarter with a goal in the fourth minute, which senior Andrew Ednie (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) assisted. Farrell followed suit with his second goal in the eighth minute after Lycoming regained control of the ball off a caused turnover, bringing the game to 6-1. Lycoming maintained a four-goal advantage, 6-2, into halftime. Tomi Horsley and Jack Cushwa each scored a goal for Allegheny in the first half.
Making a comeback in the third quarter, Allegheny jumped out with a goal by Alex Crespo in the fourth minute and Cushwa followed with his second goal of the game in the seventh minute, cutting Lycoming's lead to two. Farrell pushed forward with 27 seconds left on the clock to secure his third goal of the game and Lycoming's first of the period, assisted by senior Brian Hulsey (Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis Area Christian). The Warriors ended the third period with a three-goal advantage, 7-4.
For Lycoming (1-1 overall), senior Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) clocked 10 saves in the first half and nine in the second. For Allegheny, Garin Stearns made eight saves.
The Warriors return to UPMC Field for their home opener on Wednesday, March 5, against Penn College at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
