Wetzel leads Warriors against Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - Senior Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa. / North Schuylkill) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 11 points, including three 3-pointers that widened her program record in career 3-pointers to 173, in an 85-38 setback against second-ranked University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday evening, Feb. 19, at John Long Center.

Wetzel set the program record for 3-pointers in a career in Landmark Conference action against Susquehanna last Wednesday, Feb. 12, and has hit seven in the two games since. She has jumped into fourth in the league with an average of 1.8 treys per game.

Junior Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa. / Nativity BVM) followed Wetzel, helping the Warriors (4-20 overall, 3-14 Landmark) with seven points. Senior Sarah Lanphear (Chittenango, N.Y. / Chittenango) contributed six points with two 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the game. Senior Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa. / North Pocono) added seven rebounds, joined by senior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional) and junior Allison Fisher (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell), who each secured five.

Scranton jumped out with two free throws and four layups in the first quarter, bringing the Royals' early lead to 10-0. In the fifth minute, senior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) drove forward with a layup and followed with two free throws, putting the Warriors on the board. Goldenziel and sophomore Alyssa Reisinger (Kulpmont, Pa. / Mount Carmel Area) added back-to-back jumpers in the seventh minute. As Scranton widened their lead to eight points, Abdo pushed forward to make a layup in the eighth and ninth minutes. The Royals ended the first period with a 12-point lead, 23-11.

Scranton started the second period scoring with a series of free throws and two layups in the first four minutes of play. At the top of the fifth minute, Goldenziel got the Warriors on the board with a jumper. Abdo drained a 3-pointer in the seventh minute in response to the Royals' growing separation, 35-16. A minute later Wetzel swept a 3-pointer through the hoop, but Scranton ended the period with two layups, bringing the score to 41-19.

In the third period, Wetzel connected on two 3-pointers. In the fourth quarter, Wetzel followed up with a layup in the third minute. First-year Summer Emlet (New Cumberland, Pa. / Red Land) swooped a 3-pointer into the net with six minutes remaining. Lanphear drained a 3-pointer in the ninth minute, and sophomore Sydnie Stone (Muncy Valley, Pa. / Montoursville Area) added a jumper with less than two minutes remaining. Lanphear drained her second 3-pointer of the game with nine seconds on the clock.

Kaci Kranson led the Royals (24-0 overall, 17-0 Landmark) with 18 points. Elizabeth Bennett followed with 13 points and Katie Gorski added nine. Meghan Lamanna also posted six rebounds to help Scranton's efforts.

Senior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) posted three rebounds in the game, leaving her one shy of 500 in her career, as the Warriors visit the 15th-ranked Catholic University of America for a 2 p.m. Landmark Conference game in the season finale on Saturday, Feb. 22.
