WASHINGTON, D.C. - Three players — seniors Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills Regional), Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) and Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa. / North Schuylkill) — reached double figures to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team in a 77-64 setback against 15th-ranked Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, on Franny Murray Court.
Dufner led the Warriors (4-21 overall, 3-15 Landmark) with 18 points, including 10 made free throws and three assists. Dufner ranks fourth in the league for free throw percentage (.851). She also ranks in the top 20 in the conference with 249 points, an average of 10.4 points per game, and 121 rebounds, an average of 5.0 rebounds per game. The senior posted 857 points in her career to go with 448 rebounds, 226 assists, ninth in program history and 176 steals, ninth in program history.
Yoh contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds, as she became the 13th Warrior to reach 500 career rebounds, finishing her career 11th in school history with 509. Yoh ranks in the top 20 in the Landmark Conference for rebounds with 142, an average of 5.7 per game.
Wetzel added 12 points. The program record-holder for 3-pointers in a career added four more treys against Catholic, bringing her career total to 177. Wetzel ranks fourth in the league for 3-pointers with an average of 1.9 treys per game. Wetzel also ranks sixth in the league for 3-pointer percentage with a .286 percentage. She finished her career eighth in program history with 177 career steals.
Senior Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa. / North Pocono) also contributed eight points, nine rebounds and three steals against Catholic (22-3 overall, 15-3 Landmark). Junior Allison Fisher (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) added five rebounds. Dufner, Goldenziel and junior Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa. / Nativity BVM) all recorded three assists.
To kick off the scoring in the first period, Wetzel jumped out to drain a 3-pointer with 8:43 left on the clock and she followed up with another a minute later. Yoh followed up 30 seconds later with a layup, widening Lycoming's early lead to eight points. Catholic bounced back to tie the game at 8 with four minutes left in the period. Goldenziel drove forward with a layup to reclaim Lycoming's lead, which Dufner widened with another layup a minute later. With a minute left in the period, Catholic sunk a 3-pointer that gave them a two-point advantage, 14-12.
Catholic hit a layup, two free throws and a jumper in the first four minutes of the second quarter, during which Yoh added a free throw. Dufner followed up at the bottom of the fourth minute with a layup, bringing the Cardinals' lead to five, 20-15, and Goldenziel pushed past Catholic's defense to add another layup in the fifth minute. Dufner hit a series of free throws, bringing the game within one point with four minutes remaining. After Catholic added more points to the board, Dufner closed the gap again with a layup and a free throw, bringing the game to 23-22. Sophomore Alyssa Reisinger (Kulpmont, Pa. / Mount Carmel Area) added a free throw with 3:15 left on the clock, tying the game at 23, and Abdo built on this momentum to hit a jumper 40 seconds later. With two minutes remaining until halftime, Wetzel sunk her third 3-pointer, working off a rebound from Dufner. Goldenziel posted a layup to close out Lycoming's scoring as the Warriors maintained a two-point lead, 30-28, into break.
By the fourth minute of the third quarter, Catholic had reclaimed a one-point lead, 31-30, which Reisinger countered 30 seconds later with a jumper. Dufner followed up with a layup and free throw, bringing the Warriors' advantage to four. The Cardinals responded with a 3-pointer that brought the game within one point again, 35-34, and they took the lead with two free throws seconds later. Wetzel bounded down the court to claim her fourth trey of the night and secure Lycoming a lead again, which was quickly tied by a jumper by Catholic. Yoh hit a layup with 3:29 remaining in play and followed up with another 25 seconds later. Fisher drained a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the third quarter. With a minute left, Yoh landed two more layups, closing out the period with a 51-44 lead.
The Cardinals entered the fourth quarter with a layup and free throw in the first 15 seconds. Within three minutes, Catholic led by five points. Abdo bounded forward to sink a trey with 6:42 remaining, keeping Catholic's lead at bay. The Cardinals followed with back-to-back jumpers in the fourth and fifth minutes before adding back-to-back 3-pointers in a 10-point run. Dufner and Goldenziel added a series of free throws, bringing the game to within 68-60 with 4:24 remaining. Another 3-pointer by Catholic pushed the Cardinals over 70 points. Yoh hit a layup with 2:20 remaining and Dufner added free throws, ending the game at 77-64.
Keegan Douglas led the Cardinals with 21 points and Anna Scoblick followed close behind with 20, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Kerry Flaherty added 17 points to the board and six rebounds. Alexa Kenah clocked nine rebounds and Carly Mulvaney notched seven rebounds, five blocks and two steals.
