WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior 184-pounder
Eli Crum (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) and senior heavyweight
Robbie West (Washington, Pa./Fort Cherry) notched wins in bouts against regionally-ranked grapplers to help the Lycoming College wrestling team to a win on the first tiebreaking criteria, 21-20, over Penn College on Thursday night, Feb. 13, at Lamade Gym.
Â
The dual meet ended with a tie score of 20-20, but the Warriors (12-4 overall) earned a tiebreaking point, as they won six of the 10 matches in the dual, the first tiebreaking criteria in a NCAA dual.
Â
With the match tied at 14, Crum provided a solid upset, as the third-ranked grappler in the region notched a takedown and two-point near fall in the first period, helping set up a 9-3 win over Isaac Cory, ranked second in Region 2.
Â
West's win at heavyweight sealed the match, as the region's fifth-ranked grappler notched a 9-7 win over sixth-ranked Nicholai Brotzman, helping tie the meet at 20 through 10 bouts. West hit a five-point move on a takedown and two-point near fall after an escape off a injury team restart to lead, 6-0, but Brotzman tied the match with a reversal and four-point near fall, ending the period on top. Choosing neutral in the second period, West got a winning takedown before Brotzman was issued a penalty point off two stall warnings in the final period.
Â
Senior 125-pounder
Kaden Majcher (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run), ranked first in the region, notched a 13-1 major decision before regionally-ranked Penn College grapplers Kaden Ware and Noah Hunt helped the Wildcats (7-2 overall) take a 9-4 lead after three bouts.
Regionally-ranked junior 149-pounder
Kobin Karper (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) rebounded with an 11-1 major decision over T.J. Martin and senior 157-pounder
Logan Bartlett (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) added a 3-2 win over Gavin Gomes at 157 pounds to give Lycoming a 11-9 lead.
Â
The Wildcats used a tech fall at 174 pounds by regionally-ranked Carter Davis to lead 14-11 before regionally-ranked sophomore 174-pounder
Nolen Zeigler (Loysville, Pa./West Perry) notched an 8-4 win over Travis Green tied the match. A pin by the Wildcats at 197 pounds gave them a 20-17 lead heading into the final bout.
The Warriors now will have a little over two weeks rest in preparation for the NCAA Region 2 Qualifier, which is set to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, in the Keiper Recreation Center.
