Layton scores 16 in Lone Star State

SEGUIN, Texas – Posting a 43-point second half, the Lycoming College men's basketball team cooled off a Texas Lutheran University team that shot 62 percent in the first half, but fell 82-67 in non-conference action at Memorial Gym on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 30.
 
Playing in his home state, sophomore Princeton Layton (Katy, Texas/Katy Paetow) posted 16 points, drew 12 fouls, grabbed five rebounds and also added two assists and two steals to lead the Warriors (3-7 overall). First-year Noa'Sosa Friedman (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) added 10 points, six rebounds and two assists, junior Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) added eight points and senior J.J. Beagle (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) added seven.
 
Junior Connor Shanahan (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) added six points and two assists and senior Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added five points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Noah Mathis (Ewing, N.J./Notre Dame) posted six rebounds.
 
The Warriors cooled the Bulldogs (5-4 overall) hot start, as they shot just 32 percent (9-of-28) in the second half. Lycoming closed the game with nine straight points in the final 3:17, their longest scoring run of the game.
 
In the first half, after four straight free throws from Shanahan brought the Warriors within two at 18-16 with 11:02 left, the Bulldogs scored 21 in a row while finishing the half on a 35-8 run to lead 53-24 at the break.
 
Semaj Edwards posted 18 points and Isaac Orozco added 17 points to go with four assists to lead the Bulldogs. Mason Wallace added 14 points. Teddy Tapken posted seven rebounds and four assists.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 3, when they head to Lebanon Valley College for a 1 p.m. game.
