Karper leads Warriors at Behrend Duals

ERIE, Pa. – In his first action of the season, senior 157-pounder Kobin Karper (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) recorded three pins to help the 20th-ranked Lycoming College wrestling team finish 2-1 at the Behrend Duals, beating RIT, 25-18 and Washington & Jefferson, 35-14, but falling to Penn State-Behrend, 24-23, on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 15, at the Junker Center.
 
The Warriors won six of the 10 bouts against RIT (1-2), including three bonus-point wins to post the 25-18 win.
 
Karper debuted with a second-period pin on Max Watson to give Lycoming a 12-8 lead before ninth-ranked junior Kaiden Wagner (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewsiburg Area) pinned Mason Grodzki in less than a minute at 165 pounds. Second-ranked junior Nolen Zeigler (Loysville, Pa./West Perry) added a 12-3 major decision of Jack Lamson at 174. Senior 184-pounder Eli Crum (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) posted a 10-3 decision to finish the run.
 
Senior 125-pounder Lenny Cocca (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and junior 141-pounder Major Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa./Trinity) also had decisions in the win.
 
Lycoming won another six bouts in the 35-14 win over Washington & Jefferson (1-4), with all six wins coming in bonus-point fashion.
 
First-year 133-pounder Luke Mangini (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and Lewis had pins to give Lycoming a 12-3 lead before Karper added another pin to start a run of 17 points, with Wagner picking up a forfeit and Zeigler posting a 15-0 first-period tech fall of John Starusko. To cap the meet, first-year heavyweight Howar Brambley (Breezewood, Pa./Everett) pinned Fre'Jon Beasley in the first period.
 
The Lions (2-1) withstood four-bout run where the Warriors scored all 23 of its points to post the 24-23 win.
 
Karper started the run at 157 with a pin of Hunter Savitz before Wagner posted a tech fall of Mason Savitz and Zeigler added a pin in 1:08 of Matthew Melchoir at 174. Crum finished the run with a second-period pin of Anthony Salvini.
 
The Warriors are back in action with a 2:30 p.m. dual meet at McDaniel College on Sunday, Nov. 23.
