Pleska leads Warriors in first game at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore Zachary Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana) notched a double and a triple to go with a run and a RBI to pace the Lycoming College baseball team's offense on Friday afternoon, March 22, as the team opened a Landmark Conference series at the University of Scranton with a 4-3 setback at Volpe Field.

Pleska was a factor in the first two Lycoming (4-12 overall, 1-4 Landmark) runs. After sophomore Jack Kelly (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) singled in the top of the third, Pleska drilled a pitch down the left-field line for a RBI double.

The Royals (9-3 overall, 3-1 Landmark) scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead, using four hits, two walks and a hit batter to get the lead.

In the fifth, sophomore Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) was hit by a pitch before Pleska delivered a one-out triple to right-center, but Reeder was called out for not touching third base. After junior Evan Mok (Daly City, Calif./St. Ignatius) was hit by a pitch, Pleska came home on a double steal.

The Warriors closed within a run in the sixth, as junior Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) walked with one out, moved to second on a single by sophomore Max Krasnow (Southwest Ranches, Fla./Western) and scored on an error.

Sophomore Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) reached third after singling with two outs in the fifth, but a flyout ended the inning and Scranton retired the last six batters to preserve the win.

Thomas Plunk (1-0) earned the win for the Royals, pitching five innings, allowing three hits, two runs and three walks. He struck out eight. Logan Mason earned the save, striking out one in a perfect ninth. Junior Zac Zaller (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) (0-4) pitched three innings, allowing six hits, four runs and three walks. Lycoming's bullpen pitched five scoreless innings, with sophomore Joel Inman (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) tossing two, first-year Alex Halbert (Laurel, Md./Atholton) one and first-year Grayson Rinker (Jersey Shore, Pa./Montoursville Area) two, allowing three hits and striking out five combined.

Jack Heineman led the Royals offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

The Warriors will wrap up the three-game series at Scranton with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, March 24, at Volpe Field.
