Warrior rallies come up short at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – Despite getting the University of Scranton into a pair of save situations, the Lycoming College baseball team came up short, 4-2 and 8-4, in a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Volpe Field on Sunday, March 24.

Junior Danny DeLucas (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) led the Warriors (4-14 overall, 1-6 Landmark) with four hits and a triple in the doubleheader.

In the first game, the Warriors loaded the bases with one out in the ninth to put the tying run on base, but a pair of groundballs helped Scranton (11-3 overall, 5-1 Landmark) finish a 4-2 win.

Down 4-1 entering the ninth, junior Evan Mok (Daly City, Calif./St. Ignatius) led off the rally with a clean single into right with one out before senior Joey Trout (North East, Md./St. Elizabeth (Del.)) chopped a single off the turf into the outfield and first-year Ryan Tan (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) walked to load the bases. A grounder to the pitcher brought in one run and a grounder to short ended the game with the tying run at second.

Lycoming got its only run off Scranton starter Hunter Ralston in the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) singled to right to leadoff, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a double to left by sophomore Zachary Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana).

Scranton scored two runs in the fourth and got single tallies in the fifth and eighth to take a 4-1 lead into the ninth.

Sophomore Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) (0-5) pitched five innings, allowing six hits, one walk and one earned run. He struck out four. Sophomore Joel Inman (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) pitched three innings in relief, allowing two hits and a run. He struck out one.

Ralston pitched eight innings, allowing five hits, a run and a walk. He struck out eight. Logan Mason earned the save, allowing two hits and a run.

Matthew Querey led the Royals, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and a RBI. T.J. Pleban went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

After falling behind by seven runs in the second game, the Warriors rallied to get the tying run on-deck in the second game of the doubleheader before a strikeout helped Scranton survive with an 8-4 win.

Down 8-1 entering the ninth, sophomore Julien Stellar (Kulpmont, Pa./Mount Carmel) started the rally with a walk. After a wild pitch, sophomore Ethan Snyder reached on an error to score Stellar. Senior Kenny Nichols followed with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch before sophomore Jack Kelly (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) drove in two runs with a single into center. After a fielder's choice, a walk extended the rally, but a strikeout by Scranton reliever Joe Flanagan ended it.

Lycoming took an early lead in the second, as Mok doubled to lead off before scoring on a groundout.
Scranton scored two in the bottom of the second before taking control with a two-run fourth and four-run sixth.

DeLucas led the Warriors in the game, going 3-for-4 with a triple. Jake Elston led the Royals, going 3-for-3 with a triple, homer, two runs and three RBI.
