BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Sophomore
Isaiah Valentine (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) posted his second straight 20-point game to lead a group of four Lycoming College men's basketball players in double figures, but a late rally from down 13 came up short in the final minute, as Moravian University held on for a 75-66 Landmark Conference win at Johnston Hall on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10.
Â
Valentine finished with 20 points, hitting four 3-pointers, three steals and two assists. First-year
Hayden Pardoe (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) added 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, sophomore
J.J. Beagle (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) added 11 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks in his fifth double-double of the season and senior
Brendon Blackson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) added 10 points, three assists and two blocks. Senior
Steven Hamilton (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) nine points, five rebounds and four assists for the Warriors (8-15 overall, 4-12 Landmark).
Â
Down 59-46 with 8:10 to go, the Warriors worked back into the game with seven straight points over the next two minutes, with Hamilton hitting a driving layup to close with six with 6:28 to go. Three minutes later, Valentine scrambled on the floor to get to a loose ball and found a streaking Beagle, who hit a layup to make it 65-61, but Moravian (9-14 overall, 5-11 Landmark) scored the next five points to take the clock under a minute.
Â
A pair of quick layups, one by Blackson and one by Hamilton, which he converted into the old-fashioned 3-point play, made it 70-66 with 34 seconds left, but the Greyhounds went 5-of-6 at the line in the waning seconds to seal the win.
Â
Moravian led 21-12 10 minutes into the game before Lycoming responded with a 10-point run to take the lead off a 3-pointer from Valentine with 7:47 to play. The Greyhounds scored the next seven before the Warriors scored eight in a row to lead 29-28 off a Beagle hook shot with 2:49 left, but another seven-point Moravian run made it 35-30 at the break. In the second half, the Greyhounds built a double-digit lead in the first five minutes of the period, keeping a three-possession lead until Lycoming's run of seven straight points cut the lead to six.
Â
Marquis Ratcliff finished with 19 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks, Filippo Baldo notched 13 points and Gary Francis added 12 points and six rebounds.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 14, when they head to the University of Scranton for a 7 p.m., Landmark Conference game.
