Three in semis, West sets pins record on first day at Petrofes

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Three Lycoming College wrestlers – senior 125-pounder Kaden Majcher (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run), sophomore 174-pounder Nolen Zeigler (Loysville, Pa./West Perry) and junior 184-pounder Eli Crum (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs – have reached the semifinals of the 15-team Petrofes Invitational after the conclusion of Friday, Dec. 6's competition at Hitchcock Arena.
 
All three wrestlers will face nationally-ranked grapplers in the semifinals – 15th-ranked and second-seeded Majcher will look for his 99th career win against 14th-ranked and third-seeded Keito Shaw of Alvernia. Fourth-seeded Zeigler will face second-ranked and top-seeded Nathan Lackman of Alvernia and fourth-seeded Crum faces the top-seeded and 13th-ranked Ryder Slayton of Messiah.
 
The Warriors finished the first day in sixth place in the 15-team field with 72 points, sitting behind Springfield (115.5), 10th-ranked Alvernia (114.5), Messiah (114), 21st-ranked Averett (87) and Adrian (75.5).
 
Three other wrestlers are still alive in wrestlebacks and will place in the tournament – junior 141-pounder Kobin Karper (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), junior 197-pounder Jimmy Ellis (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and junior heavyweight Michael Sipps (Lawrenceville, Pa./Cowanesque Valley).
 
Senior heavyweight Robbie West (Washington, Pa./Fort Cherry) started his tournament with a pin of Messiah's Preston Nitschke-Love in 2:26 to break the school record for career pins with his 52nd stick, surpassing the mark of 51 set by two-time All-American and national champion Royce Eyer '01. He added a pin of King's Ryan Tran in 1:26 to reach the quarterfinals, but dropped his last two matches of the day to exit the tournament.
 
The six Warriors remaining in the field will get back on the mat for the rest of the Petrofes Invitational when it resumes at 9 a.m.
 
Majcher strolled into the semifinals with a 15-0 technical fall of Averett's Kyree Flamer and followed that with a 10-0 major decision against regionally-ranked  Anakin Burks of Shenandoah in the quarterfinals.
 
Zeigler reached the semifinals thanks to a pin of Averett's Tyler-Nicholas Ritz in 28 seconds and an 11-3 major decision over regionally-ranked Dylan Weaver of Shenandoah.
 
Crum reached the semifinals with a pair of pins, decking Averett's Grayson Rigwald in 30 seconds and Muhlenberg's Fletcher Goodman in 3:55.
 
Karper cruised through his first two matches, beating Saint Vincent's Tyler Debnar by fall in 2:37 and added a 15-0 tech fall of Abel Brunk to reach the quarterfinals, where Luke Temple edged out a 4-3 win. In his first consolation match, he downed Averett's Andrews Cortes by major decision, 11-3. Karper, the No. 3 seed, will face seventh-seeded Sampson Ross of Adrian to start Saturday in the consolation bracket.
 
Ellis opened his tournament with a 13-11 decision against Muhlenberg's Noah Schlofer, but regionally-ranked Sawyer Dereszynski beat Ellis by tech fall in the second round. Ellis rebounded with three straight wins to earn a placement, beating Saint Vincent's Mergim Bushati by fall in 4:11, then notching a 4-1 decision over Simeon Hunte and a 14-7 decision over regionally-ranked Casey Allen of Springfield. He will face third-seeded and regionally-ranked Christian Curley of Bridgewater State to open Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals.
 
Sipps, making his debut with the Warriors after the football season concluded, was pinned in his first match by Messiah's regionally-ranked Micah Martinez. He rebounded quickly, notching a 17-2 tech fall of Bridgewater State's Mathew Piper, pinning King's Tran in 1:52 and Valenzano in 4:08 to reach the fourth round of consolations, where he beat Gettysburg's Simon Taylor, 4-2. He will face Greensboro's Jacob Barlow, who eliminated West with a 14-2 major decision, in the consolation quarterfinals.
