WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Junior Riley Marines (East Berlin, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) posted two goals for the Lycoming College field hockey team, one during the first quarter and another in the fourth quarter off a penalty stroke, helping the team to a key 3-1 in Landmark Conference play at Wilkes University on Tuesday evening, Oct. 22, at Schmidt Stadium.
The Warriors improved to 8-7 overall and 3-4 in the Landmark, moving into a tie for fifth place in the conference with two regular-season games remaining and six conference championship spots on the line. The Warriors have a key showdown with Drew University, who is one game back of the Warriors on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 12 p.m. at UPMC Field, and wrap up conference play next Tuesday, Oct. 29, against third-place Scranton. Wilkes, who last lost to Lycoming in 1991, fell to 2-14 overall and 0-7 Landmark Conference.
In the 10th minute of the first quarter, junior Victoria Burton (Marietta, Pa. / Donegal) snagged the ball off a penalty corner and fired it in, where Marines tipped it into the net.
Less than a minute later, first-year Lacy Eckard (Muncy, Pa. / Muncy) gained possession of the ball and launched it a cross first-year Maggie Campbell (Bloomsburg, Pa. / Central Columbia), who posted the Warriors' second goal.
With eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, Marines fired a successful penalty stroke goal, bringing Lycoming to a 3-0 score.
In net for the Warriors, junior Isabella Bobé (York Springs, Pa. / Bermudian Springs) saved 22 shots launched by Wilkes, as the Colonels fired 26 shots. Bobé stopped 11 shots in the fourth quarter, stick saving a shot over her head on a penalty corner at one point in the quarter, as she tied her career high with 22 saves. For the Colonels, Olivia Wickel made one save.
Lycoming had eight shots with four coming from Marines, who led the Warriors' offensive efforts. The Warriors also notched three penalty corners to the Colonels' 19.
With seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, Morgan Hermanofski secured a goal for Wilkes, assisted by Morgan Millard.
