HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Junior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J./ Warren Hills Regional) put up 20 points to lead the Lycoming College women's basketball team as it fell, 71-64, to Juniata College in Landmark Conference action at Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Dufner scored 18 points in the second half of the game, adding five rebounds, seven steals and five assists. Sophomore Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) led the Warriors with six points at halftime and finished with 13. Junior Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa./ North Schuylkill) and junior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./ Eastern Lebanon County) both put up nine points for the Warriors (10-10 overall, 4-9 Landmark).
The Eagles (3-17 overall, 2-11 Landmark) started the game on a 12-3 run before the Warriors closed within five at 14-9 by the end of the first quarter thanks to a fastbreak bucket from Yoh. The Warriors continued to rally in the second quarter, capping a 17-5 run with a layup from Abdo with 4:21 left. The Eagles finished the half, however, with a 10-4 run and took a 27-24 lead into the break.
The Eagles led by nine in the third quarter at 36-27 before Lycoming answered back, with a 3-pointer from Wetzel with 1:40 left making it 38-36. However a late run by Juniata helped it take a six-point lead into the final quarter, where it led by 10 with 3:28 left before the Warriors, thanks to jumpers from Dufner and Yoh closed within five with 2:28 left at 64-59. The Eagles scored the next three points, though, and were able to keep the Warriors from getting back within two possessions in the closing minutes.
Bri Bodtorf had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Juniata with a double-double. Two other players Haily Sherman (19) and Emma Coolidge (14) were in double figures, as the Eagles shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field and 58 percent in the second half (18-of-31).
Senior Emily Lockard (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) led the team with seven rebounds and added on five points for the team.
The Warriors will be back on the court Saturday, Feb. 3 as they host Goucher College in Landmark Conference play at 4 p.m. following the men's basketball game at 2 p.m. at Lamade Gym.
