Bottger’s eighth-inning single lifts Warriors’ postseason hopes

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – First-year Josh Bottger (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes-Barre) delivered an opposite field single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to score first-year Zachary Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana) with the winning run to lift the Lycoming College baseball team to a 4-2 win and a series sweep of Delaware Valley University on Tuesday, April 25, at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.

After the Aggies (13-21 overall, 7-14 MAC Freedom) got the first two outs of the eighth inning, Pleska singled into center field before first-year Gehrig Blanchard (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) walked, forcing a pitching change. On the next pitch, Bottger delivered a single into shallow right field to score Pleska and a throwing error allowed Blanchard to score as well.

The win significantly improves the Warriors' chances of earning the fifth and final MAC Freedom Championship slot, as they moved to 12-22 overall and 9-14 in the MAC Freedom, a half-game ahead of sixth-place Wilkes, who at 8-13 in league play have a three-game weekend set with last-place FDU-Florham on tap this weekend. The Aggies, a game behind the Warriors, have a three-game set with King's, who are 2.5 games back of the Warriors at 6-15. Lycoming has one conference game left, scheduled with second-place Arcadia on Sunday, April 30, at Muncy Bank Ballpark.

The Warriors got their strongest start of the season from first-year Zac Zaller (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood), who threw seven shutout innings to start the game, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out three. He retired eight in a row between the second and the fifth and got the benefit of a fifth-inning double play. No Aggie runner reached third during his stay on the mound.

The Aggies tied the game at two in the eighth, scoring a pair of unearned runs off a two-out throwing error.

The Warriors jumped out to the lead in the first inning, when first-year Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) reached on an error before two walks loaded the bases, setting up a two-RBI infield single from first-year Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township).

Sophomore Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) (1-0) earned the win for the Warriors, tossing the last two innings, allowing two hits, two walks and no earned runs. He struck out one. Dalton Moore (5-5) pitched 3 2/3 for the Aggies, allowing four hits, two walks and one earned run. He struck out one.

Reeder finished 2-for-4 with a run to lead the Warriors.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 26, when they host Elmira College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
