Trout’s homer puts Warriors in fifth

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior Joey Trout (North East, Md./St. Elizabeth) delivered a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to move the Lycoming College baseball team into a tie for the fifth and final MAC Freedom Championship slot with three games remaining in the conference schedule, as Lycoming won game one of a doubleheader with third-place Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-4, before falling 7-1 in the second game at Dobbelaar Field on Saturday, April 22.

The Warriors (11-21 overall, 8-13 MAC Freedom) are tied with Wilkes for the fifth and final playoff spot with three games remaining in each of the team's conference seasons. The Warriors have single nine-inning games against Stevens (23-11 overall, 13-7 MAC Freedom) (Sunday, April 23), Delaware Valley (13-20 overall, 7-13 MAC Freedom) (Tuesday, April 25) and Arcadia (25-9 overall, 17-3 MAC Freedom)  (Sunday, April 30) and Wilkes (14-21 overall, 8-13 MAC Freedom) has a three-game set with last-place FDU-Florham (7-28 overall, 4-17 MAC Freedom) on April 28-29. Wilkes does hold the tiebreaker over the Warriors, having won two of the three games during the teams' series.

The Warriors entered the seventh inning down 4-2, when sophomore Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) singled to left with one out before first-year Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) doubled to center field, setting up Trout, who delivered a three-run shot over the center field fence.

Schilling then came on to close out the game, retiring Stevens in order in the seventh, notching his fourth save of the year. First-year Joel Inman (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) (1-1) earned the win while throwing one pitch, as Hoheb caught a runner stealing to end the sixth.

Stevens scored two in the first before the Warriors rallied to tie the game in the third, as first-year Greg Wirin (Interlaken, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) walked to lead off before first-year Jack Kelly (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) singled. A groundout brought in Wirin before a single from junior Braden Campbell (Centerville, Utah/Cooper Hills) singled to right to score Kelly.

The Ducks added two more in the fifth, setting up the seventh-inning dramatics from the Warriors.

Evan Pravato went 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Jack Stafford was also 2-for-3 for Stevens.

First-year Grant Bachman (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport Area) threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs to start the game before the bullpen threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to allow the team to comeback.

Justin Doyle (5-4) tossed a five-hit complete game, allowing five runs and a walk. He struck out nine.

The Warriors held an early lead in the second game, but Stevens scored the last seven runs of the game to split the doubleheader.

Campbell walked before taking second and third on wild pitches before a pair of hit batters loaded the bases, setting up an RBI single from Trout.

Stevens starter Ryan Shea (4-1) was in control after that, allowing just two hits and striking out five in five innings.

The Ducks tied the game in the first before scoring twice in the third and four in the fifth.

First-year Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) (1-2) pitched three innings, allowing five hits and three runs.

Chris Davis went 2-for-4 with two runs and Michael Reyes went 2-for-3 with two runs. Jack Irby went 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Ducks.

The Warriors wrap up their three-game MAC Freedom series with Stevens with a single nine-inning game with key implications for the conference championship on Sunday, April 23, at 1 p.m., at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
