Wilber’s start, big innings get Warriors past King’s, 8-5

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – First-year pitcher Jake Wilber (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) tossed five innings, striking out five and allowing three runs to pace the Lycoming College baseball team, which used a five-run fourth inning to break open the game and post an 8-5 MAC Freedom win at King's College on Monday, April 10, at Lupo Field.

In Wilber's longest start of the year, he earned his third consecutive win in as many appearances to improve to 3-3, retiring the first seven batters that he faced, allowing two runs in the third and one in the fifth.

King's (10-16 overall, 3-12 MAC Freedom) closed within a run in the third at 3-2, but Lycoming (8-16 overall, 6-9 MAC Freedom) broke the game open in the fourth inning when they plated five runs. First-year Kai Foster (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) started the inning with a single before taking second on a sac bunt and scoring on a single through the right side from first-year Jack Kelly (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City). After an error allowed first-year Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) to reach, junior Braden Campbell (Centerville, Utah/Cooper Hills) drove in Kelly with a single to right. After a fielder's choice allowed Reeder to score and a walk, junior Joey Trout (North East, Md./St. Elizabeth) cleared the bases with a double to right center.

The Monarchs scored a single run in the fifth and two in the eighth, but sophomore Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) pitched a hitless ninth inning to earn his second save.

The Warriors got started in the second when Trout reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a single from first-year Zachary Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana) and scored on a double in the gap from Foster. A one-out groundout scored Pleska before a passed ball helped Foster score.

Foster led the Warriors, going 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a RBI. Trout also had two RBI and a double.

First-year Noah Miller (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) pitched three innings of relief, allowing two hits, a walk and two runs. He struck out two.

Jacob Sutton led the Monarchs, going 2-for-4 with two runs. Adin Hoderewski took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out two, walked one and allowed six hits.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 12, when they head to Susquehanna University for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
