Zimmerman scores seven against Bulldogs

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Scoring a career-high seven goals, senior Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team in a 13-8 setback to DeSales University to open MAC Freedom action on Wednesday night, March 29, at UPMC Field.

With 133 career goals, Zimmerman continues his climb up the career record book, passing Ethan Payne '12, 126 goals, and Todd Lightner '00, 127 goals, to move into fourth in the program's history, just two shy of Shawn Rosa '00. He also became the ninth player in program history to reach 175 career points, having posted 133 goals and 42 assists in his career. He also picked up two ground balls.

Sophomore attack Troy Scozzafava (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) notched a goal as well. Senior Brody Balasa (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) added four ground balls, while sophomore Jakob Switzer (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) caused four turnovers.

Down a goal early in the first quarter, Zimmerman quickly tied the game up on a wrist shot as he came around the post. A man-up opportunity just two minutes later allowed Zimmerman to give the Warriors (3-7 overall, 0-1 MAC Freedom) a 2-1 lead, as Hoover found him on the outside. Zimmerman tied the game up at three from just inside the Bulldogs'  defensive zone. With half a second remaining in the quarter, Zimmerman put the Warriors up again, coming around the back of the cage for a shot at the crease.

The Bulldogs (3-6 overall, 1-0 MAC Freedom) put up two goals in the second quarter, taking a 5-4 lead into the half.

In the third, sophomore goalkeeper Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), making a save on Luke Kelchner, cleared the ball to Scozzafava, who caught the pass at the restraining line, running it in for a shot to tie the game at five at 11:11 in the third.

The Bulldogs scored seven unanswered goals to take control. Zimmerman ended the run by snagging a ground ball at the midline and taking it in for a hard left-handed shot over two defenders. Goals seven and eight both came at 7:08 from outside, and at 6:01 on a jump shot over the shoulder of the DeSales keeper.

TJ Herron led the Bulldogs with four goals and an assist. Mark Winkler scored three goals and added two assists.

Franco made 25 saves on 52 shots. Quinton Lyons earned the win for DeSales, making 13 saves on 32 shots.

The Warriors return to the field on Wednesday, April 5, when they head to Delaware Valley University for a MAC Freedom matchup beginning at 7 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa.
