WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior
Zac Zaller (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) tossed five scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing one hit while giving the Lycoming College baseball team to jump out with the first seven runs of the game in a 7-4 MAC Freedom win at Wilkes University on Tuesday afternoon, March 28, at Bruggeworth Field.
Â
The Warriors (4-12 overall, 2-6 MAC Freedom) kept the Colonels (10-12 overall, 4-6 MAC Freedom) off the scoreboard for the first seven innings before they scored two in each of the last two frames to cut into a seven-run cushion built by the road team.
Â
Zaller (1-1) earned the win, as he allowed just two runners to reach, both in the first inning before he retired the last 14 batters that he faced, working in all five of his strikeouts and seven flyouts in that time. He yielded to first-year
Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area), who threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings before allowing two runs in the eighth. He allowed five hits and struck out two.
Â
Meanwhile, sophomore
Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs and two RBI. Reeder scored twice and first-year
Greg Wirin (Interlaken, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) had two hits and a homer.
Â
The Warriors got on the board in the third inning, as Reeder reached on an error before junior
Braden Campbell (Centerville, Utah/Cooper Hills) reached on a fielder's choice. Schilling followed with a RBI double and first-year
Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) followed with an RBI single, setting up Wirin, who homered down the left field line.
Â
In the fifth, Reeder reached on an error before coming around to score, driven in by Hoheb, and junior
Joey Trout (North East, Md./Saint Elizabeth) walked and scored in the sixth before Schilling launched a homer in the seventh for the team's seventh run.
Â
Max Alessi went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI for the Colonels and Zack Luksic went 2-for-2 with a triple, a run and RBI. Colby Butczynski (0-3) took the loss, allowing five hits and no earned runs in three innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Â
The Warriors head to Marywood for a 3:30 p.m. game on Thursday, March 30.
