Reeder gets Warriors started in split with Wildcats

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – First-year Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) scored two runs, drove in two more and pitched three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five, to lead the Lycoming College baseball team to a 12-4 win over Penn College in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Penn College on Tuesday afternoon, March 21, at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. In the second game, the Warriors brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but fell 7-3.

Reeder allowed one hit, no earned runs, walked one and struck out five in his first collegiate start for the Warriors before first-year Mason Drozal (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) (1-0) pitched two innings, allowing three hits, a run and walking three.

The Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, with sophomore Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) walking before first-year Rick Trapanese (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) singled with one out. First-year Zach Pleska (Salem, Ohio/Columbiana) followed with a  single to center to score Schilling. A walk loaded the bases before Drozal was hit by a pitch to score a run. A fielder's choice scored a third run before junior Braden Campbell (Centerville, Utah/Cooper Hills) singled into left to bring in a fourth run.

A pair of walks and a passed ball set up another RBI single from Campbell in the fourth that brought in two runs. Campbell stole second and third before scoring on a sac fly from first-year Kai Foster (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) to make it 7-1.

In the sixth, the Warriors got started when Reeder was hit by a pitch before first-year pinch-hitter Matt Worth (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) singled, setting up Schilling, who doubled to center field to score a run. Foster followed with another sac fly and an error allowed Schilling to come in and make it 10-2.

In the seventh, Lycoming tacked on two more after Penn College closed within six with two runs in the sixth. Pleska led off with a walk, reached second on a fielder's choice then scored on an error. Bailey, who reached via the fielder's choice also came around to score.

Cambell finished 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI, Schilling scored two runs, had a double and a RBI and Pleska went 1-for-2 with two runs and a RBI. Lycoming benefitted from eight walks and wrapped out six hits in the win.

Tyler Rudolph went 2-for-4 with a run and Nathan Gutskey went 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the Wildcats. Jonas McGrath (0-2) earned the loss, going 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and four runs. He walked four and struck out three.

The Warriors jumped out to a three-run lead in the second game, but the Wildcats scored the game's last seven to post a 7-3 win.

Campbell doubled with one out and Schilling delivered a two-out RBI single in the first to give Lycoming the lead. In the second, junior Joey Trout (North East, Md./Saint Elizabeth) and first-year Ethan Snyder (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) singled to lead off. After a sac moved them up, Reeder delivered a two-RBI single.

Penn College took the lead, though, with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning and added three more in the third to take a 7-3 lead.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, with Trapanese walking before Schilling singled and Worth drew a two-out walk, but a strikeout thwarted the rally.

Reeder went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Campbell went 2-for-4 with a run and Schilling went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace the Warriors in the nightcap.

Tristan Current went 2-for-3 with two runs and a double and Brian Robison went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk for the Wildcats.

First-year Treyson Green (Celebration, Fla./Windermere Prep) (0-2) allowed two hits and four runs in 1 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out three. Zac Weaver (5-0) went five innings, allowing three runs, three walks and striking out five to earn the win.
