MADISON, N.J. – First-year
Greg Wirin (Interlaken, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) had a pair of hits on each end of the Lycoming College baseball team's MAC Freedom-season-opening doubleheader at FDU-Florham on Sunday, March 12, but FDU-Florham posted a pair of wins, 8-3 and 7-2, at Naimoli Ballpark.
Â
In the first game, both first-years
Nick Reeder (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) and Wirin each had two hits to lead Lycoming (1-5 overall, 0-2 MAC Freedom), which fell to FDU-Florham (5-3 overall, 2-0 MAC Freedom), 8-3, with FDU using a four-run second to take control of the game.
Â
After the Devils scored a run in the first inning, the Warriors responded in the top of the second, with first-year
Matt Worth (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) reaching on an error before first-year
Nick Hoheb (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) singled. After both moved up on a wild pitch, Worth scored on a single to left from Wirin.
Â
The Devils, though, scored the next seven runs before the Warriors rallied in the sixth, as sophomore
Jake Schilling (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) walked to lead off, took second on a wild pitch, third on a ground ball and scored on a groundout from Hoheb. Wirin followed with a single before first-year
Josh Bottger (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Wilkes Barre Area) also singled. A passed ball and an error brought Wirin in, but a groundout ended the threat.
Â
Both Tyrus Chippenda and Jimmy Finnerty led the Devils with two runs a piece, as the team notched six hits in the contest.
Â
Sebastian Alverio (1-1) earned the win for the Devils, as he tossed five innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs. He walked two and struck out six. First-year
Zac Zaller (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) took the loss, allowing two earned runs in the first two innings. First-year
Jake Wilbur (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) pitched four innings in relief, allowing three hits and one earned run.
Â
In the second game, the Warriors rallied with a pair of runs in the seventh inning, but FDU-Florham used a four-run sixth inning to break open the game for a 7-2 win.
Â
First-year
Noah Miller (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs) (0-3) pitched well for the Warriors in the loss, allowing five hits, a walk and two runs in four innings. He struck out two.
Â
Nick Rizos (1-1) earned the win for the Devils, pitching five shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks. He struck out five.
Â
Aaron Santos led the Devils, going 3-for-4 with two runs and a triple and Tyler McCulloh went 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Â
The Warriors broke through in the seventh, when three Warriors walked with two outs to load the bases, setting the scene for a two-RBI single to center field from first-year pinch hitter
Kenny Nichols (Columbia, Md./Corry Area). A strikeout ended the rally, however.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, March 14, when they head to Gettysburg College for a 3 p.m. start.
