Dufner ices win at Wilkes

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) led the Lycoming College women's basketball team with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists, hitting a pair of game-clinching free throws with eight seconds left to cap off a 57-52 win at Wilkes University on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at Henry Gymnasium in Landmark Conference action.
Dufner hit all 10 of her free throws, as Lycoming (6-1 overall, 2-1 Landmark) hit 14-of-16 at the charity stripe while Wilkes (4-4 overall, 0-3 Landmark) went 13-of-20. Senior Emily Lockard (Benton, Pa./Benton Area) followed with 12 points, three assists, three steals, and eight rebounds.
In the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, Lockard and junior Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon Valley) combined for eight points as the team completed a 16-1 run to give the team a 10-point lead at 48-38 with 6:13 left. The Colonels cut that lead down to two points with 1:10 left at 53-51 before Dufner hit a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left. Wilkes closed back within three with 27 seconds left, but two attempts to tie the game fell of the rim, setting up Dufner's second set of free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
The Warriors trailed by a point at the end of the first quarter and four at the end of the first half and were behind 37-32 in the third quarter before starting the 16-1 run, which sandwiched the third and fourth quarters.
Wilkes was led by 21 points and four steals from Yamirelis Matos. Taylor Simpson added 11 points, Madison Robel had eight rebounds and Julia Marino had four assists.
The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 9, as they head to Drew University for a 4 p.m. Landmark Conference game.
