Youngsters lead Warriors against first-place Ducks

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Three players each had nine points for the Lycoming College women's basketball team, which fell victim to a second-half rally from the MAC Freedom's first-place Stevens institute of Technology, falling 83-55 on Sunday, Jan. 15, at Lamade Gym.
 
First-year Kami Abdo (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) led the Warriors (5-11 overall, 1-6 MAC Freedom) with nine points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Sophomore Mya Wetzel (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) put up nine points, two rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal and sophomore Jillian Pumputis (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored nine points and added two rebounds. Junior Emily Lockard (Benton, Pa./Benton) led the team with seven rebounds. 
 
Wetzel kickstarted the Warriors (5-11 overall, 1-6 MAC Freedom), dropping 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to lead the team through the first quarter. Layups by sophomore Ashley Yoh (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) and sophomore Meghan Dufner (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) kept the Ducks (14-2 overall, 7-0 MAC Freedom) close before Abdo notched for five points, a layup and three-pointer to end the quarter, where the Warriors shot 6-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 from three.
 
The Warriors posted five points in a row, their largest run of the half, as sophomore Alicia Goldenziel (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) started the charge with a layup and her own free-throw attempt followed by Abdo, who hit two free throws. Goldenziel led the team with five points in the quarter before Pumputis ended the half with a 3-pointer, bringing the Warriors within striking distance of the Ducks at the half at 36-31.
 
The Ducks pulled ahead with a nine-point run at the end of the third quarter, holding the Warriors to 11 points in the period while scoring 25, putting the game out of reach. Lockard led the Warriors in the fourth quarter with four points.
 
Jess Broad, ranked second in the conference in scoring, led the Ducks with 28 points, three rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Elissa Nsenkyire had 16 points, four assists and three steals, Leyla Castro had six assists and Amber Porrett led the team with eight rebounds.
 
The Warriors return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 18, when they head to Misericordia University for an 8 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup in Dallas, Pa.
