Zimmerman, Warriors down the Devils

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Notching his eighth hat trick of the season in the first quarter alone, senior Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with five goals and five groundballs to a 12-7 MAC Freedom win over FDU-Florham at UPMC Field on Saturday, April 9.

Six more Warriors (6-7 overall, 2-2 MAC Freedom) found the back of the net with first-year Ryan Farrell (Swedesboro, N.J./Archmere Academy) coming up with two goals, five groundballs, a caused turnover, and nine faceoff wins. Seniors Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North), Brandon Waden (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), juniors Zach Anderson (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Leheigh), Rory Hines (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland), and first-year Joey Hoover (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) also scored a goal apiece.

Senior Markus Sidwell (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) tied Zimmerman with a team-leading five groundballs. Senior Josh Hall (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the team with three caused turnovers.

Zimmerman posted four goals in the quarter with his first goal at 12:17, his second at 9:59, and the third at 7:58 off a shot by Hines. His fourth came with four seconds remaining, as the Warriors put up six in the first with Waden's goal at the five minute mark after picking up a groundball off a shot and stuffing it in and Ryan Farrell winning the faceoff before charging down the field to score as the clock hit zero in the period.

Both teams held each other scoreless for close to seven minutes in the second before Zach Anderson put the Warriors up by three with 8:16 left. Less than a minute later Hoover rifled one past Devils goalkeeper after another faceoff win by Farrell, helping end the half with the Warriors ahead, 8-4.

Hines found a goal on a man-up opportunity for the Warriors at 12:28 in the third. Zimmerman's fifth and final of the game came with 10:17 left after Massaro won the groundball on a turnover. Massaro and Ryan Farrell scored within seven seconds of each other later in the period, as Massaro found the net after a clear, and Farrell scored his second make-and-take off the faceoff win.

Robert Nawrocki led the Devils with three goals and three groundballs. Trevor Arnone led the team with seven groundballs.

First-year goalkeeper Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) earned with win, making 13 saves and picking up two groundballs before he was relieved by first-year goalkeeper Michael Lavinio (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional), who made one save. Dan Schlupp made 11 saves on the game for the Devils.

The Warriors return to the field on Wednesday, April 13, when they travel to Wilkes University for a 7 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
