Hines posts hat trick at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Notching his third hat trick of the season, junior Rory Hines (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with three goals and groundball, but DeSales University separated in the third quarter to post a 26-11 MAC Freedom win on Wednesday, April 20, at the Billera Hall Turf Fields.

First-year Joey Hoover (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) scored twice for the Warriors (7-8 Overall, 3-3 MAC Freedom). Five seniors found the back of the net with Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico), Brandon Waden (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North), Michael Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), Markus Sidwell (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie), and first-year Troy Scozzafava (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) all denting the twine.

Scozzafava led the team with three assists while Sidwell led with six groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Hines finished his hat trick in the first 30 minutes of play, his first goal on a man-up opportunity with a minute and a half remaining in the first period to tie the game at three. He scored again on a man-up play with 7:35 in the second, and his final goal came two and a half minutes later at 5:05.

Hoover's goal was the first of the night for the Warriors at 6:19 in the first after DeSales (7-5 Overall, 3-2 MAC Freedom) had tallied three and his second came at 4:00 in the second to put the Warriors within one of the Bulldogs.

Scozzafava scored with 4:11 left in the first on a good clear attempt. Scarponi's goal with 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter gave the Warriors their first lead of the night at 5-4. Zimmerman tied the game again at five at 9:45 in the second, grabbing his own groundball for the goal. Massaro nabbed the third tie of the game for the Warriors with 3:45 left in the second after first-year Ryan Farrell (Swedesboro, N.J./Archmere Academy) won the faceoff.

Waden's goal came with 7:30 left in the third and Sidwell scored on a faceoff win by Farrell, picking up his own groundball at 3:59 before the Bulldogs held the Warriors scoreless for the final quarter. DeSales scored 13 goals in the second half.

The Bulldogs had three score four and TJ Herron finished the night with three goals, two assists, five groundballs, and a caused turnover.

First-year goalkeeper Ben Franco (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and junior goalkeeper Sean Sonnie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) made a collective 12 saves. Bulldogs' goalkeepers Quinten Lyons and TJ Lowe made eight saves.

The Warriors return to the field on Saturday, April 23, when they host Delaware Valley for a 4 p.m. MAC Freedom matchup at UPMC Field.
