SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four Lycoming College men's lacrosse players found the back of the net in its season opener, with senior
Dominick Massarro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) leading the way with two goals in a tightly-contested game on Saturday, Feb. 19, at rival Susquehanna University, which used two late goals to post a 7-5 rivalry win at Sassafras Field.
Junior
Joe Corozzo (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore), sophomore
Patrick Dwyer (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata), and senior
Michael Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) each netted a goal while senior
Markus Sidwell (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) and sophomore
Max Anderson (Harrisburg, Pa./Homeschooled) each contributed an assist for the Warriors (0-1 overall).
Sophomore
Christian Spahn (Saltsburg, Pa./ The Kiski School) picked up five of the Warriors' 28 groundballs as well as posting two caused turnovers.
Scarponi tied the game at five with a smooth goal, as the ball was checked out of his stick, but he found the ball on the bounce and found the right corner with 12:13 left in the game, but Matthew Faggioli and Jack Gaillard scored for the River Hawks in the last six minutes to take the narrow win.
The River Hawks (1-0 overall) took a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter to complete a run of five straight goals after Corozzo opened the scoring. Massaro scored both his goals in the second quarter, the last with a second left in the period, as Lycoming scored a quick transition goal to head into the break down two. Dwyer got the Warriors within a goal in the third quarter, setting up Scarponi's game-tying strike.
Susquehanna was led by Faggioli, who scored two goals on three shots. Ryan Prum picked up nine ground balls while Aiden Kennedy caused five turnovers for the River Hawks.
First-year
Ben Franco made 17 saves for the Warriors. Jozef Korpiks made 11 saves on 30 shots for the River Hawks.
The Warriors return to the field on Wednesday, March 2, for their home opener when they host Ithaca College, who is receiving votes in the USILA Division III poll, at 4 p.m. at UPMC Field.
