WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A three-point attempt to tie it with nine seconds left was too strong, helping Stevens Institute of Technology overcome an early deficit to the Lycoming College men's basketball team and hold on for a 66-61 MAC Freedom win on Saturday, Jan. 22.
Stevens (7-6 overall, 6-3 MAC Freedom) moved into a tie for second in the league with the Warriors (11-6 overall, 6-3 MAC Freedom) thanks to a second half where it held the Warriors to 24 percent (8-of-33) shooting from the floor.
The Warriors were led by junior
Mo Terry (Severn, Md./Severn), who posted 18 points and 12 rebounds, one of four Warriors to finish in double figures. Sophomore
Steven Hamilton (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) added 14 points and five assists and both senior
Matt Ilodigwe (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and sophomore
Mavin James (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) each added 12. Junior
DeAundre Manuel (Brooklyn, N.Y./KIPP NYC Prep) added a career-high 11 rebounds.
The Warriors opened the game on an 11-4 run, where Ilodigwe hit two 3-pointers and made three free throws in the game's first three minutes. A second-chance 3-pointer from sophomore
Austin Loe (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) with 12:30 left was followed by a second-chance layup from Hamilton, giving Lycoming a 21-12 lead with 11:00 left to play in the first half.
Stevens worked the Warriors lead down to a point with 2:22 left, but Terry hit a 3-pointer in response and Lycoming took a 36-32 lead into the break.
The Warriors continued to pressure early in the second half, using an 8-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 16:16 left, but the Ducks used a 15-2 run in the half's middle eight minutes to take a 55-50 lead. The Warriors cut that lead down to three at 64-61 after Terry hit a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left, forced a missed shot and had a chance to tie as the clock moved under 10 seconds, but a missed 3-pointer forced a foul and the Ducks hit both free throws to close out the win.
Alec DiPietrantonio led the Ducks with 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks and Jack Spellman added six points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 29, when they head to FDU-Florham for a 3 p.m. MAC Freedom tip.
