Warriors topped at Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Junior Blake Premo (Massena, N.Y./Massena) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with three goals and freshman Lucas Podvey (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and junior Josh Hall (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) combined to scoop up 22 groundballs, but a late rally helped Wilkes University sneak out of Schmidt Stadium with an 11-10 MAC Freedom win on Wednesday, April 14.
 
Podvey won 17-of-25 faceoffs, scooping up a season-high 12 groundballs and Hall added 10 groundballs for the Warriors (0-8 overall, 0-6 MAC Freedom).
 
Sophomore Rory Hines (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) added two goals, senior Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) added a goal and an assist. Senior Jake Davis (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye) also added three caused turnovers.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a three-goal lead in the game's first five minutes, with goals from Premo, Hines and junior Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) kicking off the first quarter. In the second quarter, Wilkes drew within a goal twice, but a goal from junior Michael Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) with 2:39 left helped ensure Lycoming a 5-4 halftime lead.
 
In the third quarter, Lycoming expanded the lead to three goals twice, with a goal from Hines making it 9-6 with 2:01 left. Wilkes scored three straight to tie the game with 4:57 left, but Premo responded with a nice goal up top to make it 10-9 with 4:11 left.
 
However, Nico Lorenzo scored two goals in the last 92 seconds to give Wilkes the advantage when the horn sounded.
 
Lorenzo led the Colonels (3-6 overall, 3-4 MAC Freedom) with five goals and four groundballs and Alex Myers had two goals and an assist.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Sonnie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) stopped eight shots in net. Wilkes keepers Daniel Cox and Ryan Lasher combined to make 15 saves.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, April 17, when they host Arcadia University in MAC Freedom action at 1 p.m. at UPMC Field.
