Zimmerman and Massaro post hat tricks against Delaware Valley

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) led the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team with four goals, an assist and five groundballs, but Delaware Valley University used a nine-goal second half to post a 15-10 MAC Freedom win on Saturday, March 27, at UPMC Field.
 
Senior Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) added three goals and an assist for the Warriors (0-4 overall, 0-3 MAC Freedom), junior Michael Scarponi (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) notched two goals and an assist and senior Brandon Waden (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) posted three assists. Freshman Max Anderson (Harrisburg, Pa./Homeschooled) picked up two assists. Lycoming had assists on nine of its 10 goals.
 
The game got out to a furious start, with Zimmerman, Scarponi and Massaro each scoring a goal in the first five minutes. Goals from Scarponi and Massaro helped Lycoming take a 5-4 lead into the second quarter and Zimmerman used a one-handed second-chance goal with 11:56 left to give Lycoming a two-goal lead. Delaware Valley (3-2 overall, 2-1 MAC Freedom) tied the game with two goals from Dylan Brasch before the break.
 
Sophomore Rory Hines (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) scored 41 seconds into the second half to give Lycoming a 7-6 lead, but Delaware Valley scored the next five goals to take an 11-7 lead. The Warriors cut that lead to two at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but the Aggies outscored Lycoming, 4-1, in the final period to make up the final margin.
 
Freshman Lucas Podvey (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had six groundballs and junior Josh Hall (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) picked up seven of the team's 40, also causing one turnover.
 
Brasch led the Aggies with six goals and Matt Waibel posted three goals and an assist. Luke Kelchner had three caused turnovers and Chris Dearden led the team with nine groundballs.
 
In net, sophomore Sean Sonnie (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) posted 15 saves and added four groundballs. Jim Murphy posted 13 saves in the win for the Aggies.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 31, when they head to Messiah for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
