ALFRED, N.Y. – Winning eight of the nine events, the Lycoming College women's swim team turned in a solid performance to win the Pioneer Invitational at Alfred State College on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, defeating Alfred State, 92-65, and Genesee Community College, 122-13. The men finished second in the three-team field after winning two events individually, beating Genesee Community College, 84-54, and falling to Alfred State, 105-52.
Lycoming won both relay events on the women's side, with the team of senior
Michaela Thode (Anderson, Calif./West Valley), sophomore
Devon Kaiser (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), junior
Cara Zortman (York, Pa./Suburban York) and freshman
Katherine Brown (Glenside, Pa./Abington), posted a time of 2:01.86 to win the 200-yard medley relay and the same group in the order of Kaiser, Brown, Thode and Zortman won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:59.79.
Junior
Mikayla Wright (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 19:47.95, Brown took the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.79 and Zortman won the 100-yard freestyle in 57.20. Kaiser took the 400-yard individual medley in 5:14.30, senior
Elena Pikounis (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) took the 100-yard backstroke in come-from-behind fashion in 1:09.94 and Brown added another win in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.57.
On the men's side, junior
Brandon Vought (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:52.06, outpacing the field by a minute, and sophomore
Jake Booth (Boothwyn, Pa./Strath Haven) won the 100-yard freestyle in 51.36, coming from behind for the win thanks to a 26.47 split on his final 50.
Junior
Dominick Berardelli (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.82) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.23).
The Warriors get back in the pool on Saturday, Feb. 1, when they host Marywood at 1 p.m. at Lamade Gym Natatorium, as the team will honor its five seniors at the meet.
