WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshmen
Mo Terry (Severn, Md./Severn School) was a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point range to lift him to a career-high 24 points as the Lycoming College men's basketball team shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from beyond-the-arc, as it handed league-leading Widener University its first MAC Commonwealth conference loss of the season, 91-79, on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, at Lamade Gym.
Using a devastating performance from long range, the Warriors (13-5 overall, 6-3 MAC Commonwealth) never trailed against the Pride (15-3 overall, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth). Terry hit two 3-pointers to begin the game, freshman
Dyson Harward (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) followed with two of his own and sophomore
Matt Ilodigwe (Wilmington, Del./Concord) drained a three to begin a 10-2 run to set the tone for the rest of the game, as Lycoming owned a 30-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Terry finished with seven rebounds and six assists to go with the 24 points. Junior
Darius Dangerfield (Abington, Md./Harford Tech), Harward and senior
Ryan Hollis (Centerville, Md./Saints Peters & Paul) each finished with 15 points and Ilodigwe scored nine, as all five starters made at least two 3-pointers. Dangerfield added four assists, Harward had four assists and four blocks, becoming the fourth player in school history to block 50 shots in a season with his second swat, and Hollis added three assists and four rebounds.
The Warriors continued to build its largest lead of the game up to 19 (36-17) after Dangerfield hit a jumper at the 7:29 mark of the first half. Widener turned in a 13-0 run of its own over the next five minutes, cutting the Warriors' lead to six. Lycoming closed the half by building its lead back up to double digits, though, as Dangerfield canned a deep three with eight seconds on the clock to make it 47-35 at the break.
The Warriors shot 76.9 percent (10-for-13) from beyond the arc and 66 percent overall in the first half. Terry grabbed five rebounds and sophomore
D'Andre Edmond (Pflugerville, Texas/Pflugerville) added two blocks to hold Widener to 39 percent shooting (13-for-33) and just 4-for-14 from 3-point range.
Out of the break, Lycoming continued to use its long range, hitting eight more 3-pointers, and using its defense to keep Widener at a distance. Harward had three blocks and the team caused eight turnovers while holding Widener to 40 percent shooting. The Pride got within three points twice, once with 16 minutes remaining after a Boyd 3-pointer and after two free-throw attempts from Boyd at the 12-minute mark, but the Warriors were able to build multiple double-digit leads using its 3-point shots to close out the win.
Widener closed within four in a final run at 77-73 with 4:26 left, but Ilodigwe hit a 3-pointer and then Hollis hit one, as Lycoming closed the game on a 14-6 run.
Connor Laverty and Elijah Boyd led the offense for Widener with 28 and 16 points, respectively. Laverty had a team-best seven rebounds.
