Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) calmly drained a 3-pointer with 34 seconds left to put the Lycoming College women's basketball team ahead for good in a 53-50 MAC Commonwealth win at Arcadia University's Alumni Gym on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Knights (9-7 overall, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) closed within a point with 17 seconds left after two free throws from Taylor Dunn, but sophomore
Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) drained a pair herself with 14 seconds left.
The Knights had two opportunities to tie in the waning seconds, but neither shot fell, lifting the Warriors (12-5 overall, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth) to their third straight win.
Junior
Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds and Mader posted a team-high 13 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Warriors. Senior
Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) posted six points, four assists and three steals, Vuz finished with seven points and three steals and Reed posted six points and two assists. Junior
Sydney Purcell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) also added six points and two assists, as Lycoming shot 40 percent (21-of-52) from the field in the win.
The team's fought through 11 leads and six scoring changes, with neither team grabbing more than a seven-point advantage, which Arcadia had when it went into halftime leading 27-20.
In the third quarter, Lycoming cut the lead to two points after a Viz steal led to a layup, but Arcadia got the lead back to five at the end of the period at 38-33. Lycoming scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter, though, with Mader hitting a 3-pointer on a give from Lutz to make it 40-38 with 8:21 left. From there, the teams battled through four lead changes and two ties before Dunn hit a jumper to tie the game at 48 with 2:23 left, setting up Mader's go-ahead three after each team had a fruitless possession.
Dunn had a game-high 16 points for the Knights and Sydney Cyr posted 11 points and four steals. Julia Makowski added nine points and 11 rebounds, who shot 37 percent (19-of-52) from the field in the game.
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they host Widener University in a key MAC Commonwealth matchup at 1 p.m.
