Reed posts double-double against Widener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kenzie Reed (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) had her first career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and senior Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) tied career highs with 22 points and six 3-pointers, but Widener University used a third-quarter spurt to get past Lycoming, 84-71, in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, at Lamade Gym.

Reed hit 7-of-13 from the floor and added six of her 12 rebounds on the offensive glass, helping Lycoming (12-6 overall, 5-4 MAC Commonwealth) outrebound third-place Widener (15-3 overall, 7-2 MAC Commonwealth), 40-35. However, Widener hit two more field goals in an equal 63 attempts (30-28) and took 26 trips to the free throw line, hitting 20 attempts.

Mader tied her career-high with 22 points, as she became the fourth player in program history to hit 50 3-pointers in a season, shooting 6-of-9 from downtown. Junior Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) also added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Both senior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area), who crossed 1,100 career points with her first bucket, and junior Sydney Purcell (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) each had seven points, with Purcell adding four assists.

At halftime, the Warriors honored 2019 MAC Hall of Fame inductee Erica (Weaver) Wagner, who was a two-time Honorable Mention All-American for the Warriors in 1997-98.

The teams fought through three ties and two lead changes in the first quarter, with Lycoming getting a three-point lead after a second-chance bucket from Reed that made it 20-17. Widener started the second quarter with seven straight points, taking a 26-20 lead, but Lycoming fought back to tie it at 32 off a 3-pointer from Mader before Widener took a one-basket lead into the break at 36-34.

Lycoming stayed close through the first half of the third quarter, with an old-fashioned 3-point play from Lutz making it 47-46 with 5:18 left. Widener, however, went on a 19-7 run to complete the period to lead, 66-54, heading into the final period, where the Warriors were able to close within single digits once, off a 3-pointer from Mader with 3:06 left.

Erin Phelan led the Pride with 21 points and nine rebounds and Kyra Schenk added 15 points and nine rebounds. Madison Ireland posted 14 points and 12 assists and Jordan D'Ambrosio also added 12 points and two steals.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 29, when they head to MAC Commonwealth-leading Messiah College for an 8 p.m. game.
