Warriors complete comeback over Lions

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With the game tied at one in the 88th minute, junior defender Sheila Whitman (Lake Ariel, Pa./Wallenpaupack) created a turnover at midfield and sent a lead pass to a streaking freshmen Gabby Perez (Vineland, N.J./Vineland), who blew past the defense to fire in the game-winning goal to lift the Lycoming College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Penn State Altoona on Friday, Sept. 13, in non-conference action at UPMC Field.

The Warriors (3-2-1 overall) surpassed last season's win total in just six games and are off to their best start since 2016 where they also opened 3-2-1.

After Sadie McConnell gave the Lions (1-3-1 overall) a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute, the Warriors answered three minutes later when freshman Madison Wineburg (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) sent a cross to the top of the box where sophomore Alicia Blizzard (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) used a touch-pass to redirect the ball to sophomore Megan Oyler (Bedford, Pa./Bedford), who fired a bullet into the back of the net.

The Warriors, who outshot the Lions, 26-11, were led by six shots from junior Elle Sarracco (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional), five from freshman Jessica Umpstead (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) and four from Oyler.

Junior Samantha Marvin (Milton, Pa./Milton) earned the win in goal after entering with 20:37 to go and making a point-blank save in the 78th minute. Sophomore Bronwen Lewis (Cresaptown, Md./Allegany) made four saves in the first half before being relieved by sophomore Bekki Weller (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg).

Kaitlyn Harmon made seven saves for the Lions.

The Warriors are back on the field on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m., when they host Marywood University at UPMC Field.
