WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman
Owen Zimmerman (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) will remember his first career start at the Shangraw Athletic Complex, as the rookie attackman took over in the final 7:07, scoring four times to lead the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team from down four to a 9-8 MAC Commonwealth win over Widener University on Saturday afternoon, March 30.
Â
Zimmerman helped the Warriors (3-7 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) comeback from an 8-4 deficit midway through the fourth quarter, scoring his first goal with 7:07 left in transition on a give from sophomore
Jake Davis (Honeoye, N.Y./Honeoye). He followed that with an unassisted score with 4:59 left and scored again 23 seconds later after an out-of-bounds restart on a give from junior
Shain Quigley (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford).
Â
Lycoming kept the pressure on, with Quigley dunking a close-range goal in off a give from junior
Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) with 3:07 left. The Warriors got the ball back after a huge save from senior
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) with 1:51 left and after a solid clear, sophomore
Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) took a
bounce shot that flew behind the net where Zimmerman picked it up. He passed to senior
Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), who waited for Zimmerman to circle in front of the net before passing to Zimmerman. Zimmerman took two strides, leapt and delivered a sidewinder into the right corner.
Â
Lycoming won the faceoff, but Widener caused a turnover behind the net with less than a minute remaining. The Pride (2-8 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) couldn't get a solid look in the final seconds, though, taking two shots wide of the net, as Lycoming secured its first win over the Pride since a 7-6 double-overtime win in 2015.
Â
With 25 shots in the second half, the Warriors posted a 43-41 advantage in the category, also holding a slim advantage of winning 11-of-21 faceoffs and they turned the ball over two fewer times.
Â
Quigley, Massaro, Collins and Rode each had a goal and an assist, while Zimmerman finished with four goals and three groundballs. Senior
Austin Arroyo (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led the Warriors with four groundballs and a caused turnover and freshman
Justin Joseph (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) won 10-of-19 faceoffs.
Â
Freshman
Blake Premo (Massena, N.Y./Massena) had an assist and three groundballs and Rode also added three of the team's 39 groundballs.
Â
Tenant (3-7) finished with 15 saves to earn the win for the Warriors, as he became the second player in program history to reach 600 career stops, joining Jared Jankowski (1998-01), who holds the school record with 655 saves. Carter Landry (2-8 overall) stopped 17 shots for the Pride.
Â
Massaro scored the first goal of the game, but Widener scored the next five to take a 5-1 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, each team scored three goals, with Widener taking a 7-2 lead with 12:24 left before a pair of goals from Lycoming made it 7-4. Widener's Gavin Kirkwood scored a man-up goal with 5:44 left in the third to make it a four-goal lead before the Warriors started their comeback.
Â
Brady Franks had two goals and an assist to lead the Pride and John Dunbar posted a goal and three assists. Tim Irvine picked up six groundballs and Kenneth Watts won 10-of-20 faceoffs, posting five groundballs. Jason Higgins finished with four groundballs and caused three turnovers.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 3, when they head to Albright College for a 4 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
