2019 Lycoming Women’s Tennis preview: Sustaining success

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – After a fall season where the team adjusted to the loss of three starters from the previous spring, the 2018-19 Lycoming College women's tennis team continue its season with the return of one of those starters, beginning by hosting Lancaster Bible in a non-conference match on Wednesday, March 27, at 3 p.m. at Bruce Henry Park.

The Warriors (2-5 overall) were led by their doubles play in the fall, with senior Brittany Lenze (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and junior Hannah Summerson (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) going 4-3 at No. 1 doubles, while seniors Kimberleigh Parroccini (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) and Allyson Dugan (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) went 3-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Summerson led the singles group, with a MAC Commonwealth-leading 4-3 record at No. 1 singles and earning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week to end the fall. The two-time All-MAC Commonwealth honoree, holds the program's single-season record for combined wins (29), doubles wins (15), singles wins (16), conference player of the week awards (7) and her 34 career singles wins rank fifth and her 60 combined wins rank seventh.

"I made Hannah a team captain and she has really made a difference," ninth-year head coach LeRoy Baer said. "She is leading by example and her play is developing. She has played all winter and it has really helped her game."

The Warriors will receive a boost in their lineup with the return of junior Julia Nagle (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area), who will compete at the No. 2 singles spot, after a semester abroad in the fall. Nagle was 6-7 in singles action in 2017-18, while fighting off some nagging injuries towards the end of the season.

"I'm interested in seeing how Julia will do," Baer said. "She was over in Spain during the fall season and got to play over there. You can tell she put the work in. She has been hitting the ball well at practice."

Nagle and Summerson will team up at No. 1 doubles, after going 6-4 and reaching the semifinals in the conference tournament at the No. 2 flight in 2018. The duo went 15-6 at No. 2 doubles in 2016-17.

"Hannah and Julia have great chemistry and play well together," Baer said. "Their communication is great, and we are excited to get that duo back together."

The return of Nagle gives the Warriors a deep lineup with experience across the board. Senior Brittany Lenze (St. Mary's, Pa./Elk County Catholic) will move to the third flight, with senior Allyson Dugan (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) at No. 4 singles.

"Julia's return will give Brittany the opportunity, who was forced to play No. 2 this fall, to move back to No. 3," Baer said. "She will be teaming up with Kim Parroccini in No. 2 doubles again. They have played well in the past together and we are looking forward to that doubles team."

After an impressive start to her rookie campaign this fall, freshman Wiliana Lundy (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) will again compete at the No. 5 flight and senior Kimberleigh Parroccini (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) moves to No. 6.

"Williana Lundy was a new addition to the team this fall," Baer said. "She had a really good fall and she will be playing No. 5 again."

Sophomore Abby Flemming (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) joined the team this spring, providing depth to the lineup while competing for the No. 6 flight.
