Warriors roll past Monarchs with second-half flurry

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Down by a goal at halftime, the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team held King's College to eight shots in the second half while firing 20, leading to a six-goal half and an 11-8 come-from-behind win at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, March 2, in non-conference action.

Five Warriors (1-3 overall) finished with two goals, with junior Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) leading the way with two goals and four assists. Senior Andy Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), sophomore Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y/Sachem North), freshman Max Hanson (Prattville, Ala./Bishop Machebeuf) and junior Shain Quigley (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) also dented the twine twice each, with Ream and Massaro each also notching an assist.

Lycoming's defense hunkered down in the second half after heading into the break behind, 6-5, allowing just eight shots and forcing 12 turnovers. The group also picked up 20 groundballs while holding the Monarchs (0-4 overall) to just 14, and after starting the afternoon 7-of-11 on clears, they finished by posting 9-of-10 in the second half while holding King's to 8-of-12.

Heading into halftime on the power play after a call against King's just before the final whistle, the Warriors tied the game 22 seconds into the period, as Hanson scored on a give from Massaro. Ream gave Lycoming the lead with 11:05 left and freshman Blake Premo (Massena, N.Y./Massena) added another man-up goal with 4:43 left in the third.

Lycoming kept its run going in the fourth, as Collins assisted on his third straight goal on a dish to Quigley to make it 9-6 before Hanson and Quigley added scored to extend the lead to five goals with 6:45 left. King's Brian Steiger scored twice late to close the final gap to three.

Lycoming got on the board first with a goal from Collins before King's scored twice. Lycoming scored the next three, though, including the squad's first man-down goal of the year from Collins late in the first quarter, to take a 4-2 lead. King's posted four of the last five tallies in the second quarter, though, to grab a 6-5 lead.

Senior Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) led the Warriors with seven groundballs and senior Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) added five groundballs and two caused turnovers.
