Warriors turn away Blazers, 76-40

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With 12 blocked shots along with 15 forced turnovers, the Lycoming College women's basketball team posted a 76-40 MAC Commonwealth win over Hood College on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (17-7 overall, 11-4 MAC Commonwealth) posted 21 points off turnovers and added 16 fastbreak and 16 second-chance points, as it shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the field in the game and held Hood (6-17 overall, 2-12 MAC Commonwealth) to 22 percent (14-of-65).
 
Junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) led the home team with 18 points and seven rebounds, as she was one of 10 to score in the game. Senior Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added 13 points and a career-best six assists and senior Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) posted eight points, 11 rebounds and six blocks, tied for third-most in program history. Junior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added seven points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks.
 
Lycoming took off late in the first quarter, going on an 11-3 run in the final six minutes of the period to take a 17-9 lead, as McFadden led the run with five points. In the second quarter, Lycoming kept its momentum, starting the period on a 14-4 run to take a 31-14 lead off a layup from Kline after Lutz provided six of the first eight points in the period. Hood scored four of the last seven points of the period.
 
Lycoming continued its run in the third quarter, hitting four 3-pointers in the period, three from Painter and one from senior Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) to expand the lead to 33 points at 59-26 at the end of the period. In the fourth quarter, the Warriors turned to the bench early and it delivered 13 of the team's 17 points in the period, with freshman Alex Jones (Glenshaw, Pa./St. Joseph) posting six to lead the way.
 
Freshman Allison Wagner (York, Pa./Central York), Jones and Schoonover each had six points off the bench.
 
Mia Savoy led the Blazers with nine points and Maya Goree added seven points and four rebounds.
 
The Warriors wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they host Widener University in a critical MAC Commonwealth game at 1 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
