Warriors fall short to Pride

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) posted a career-high 22 points and junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) added her 11th double-double of the season, but a fourth-quarter rally came up just a point short, as Widener University posted a 68-67 MAC Commonwealth win on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Lamade Gym.
 
The Warriors (17-8 overall, 11-5 MAC Commonwealth) get back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they open their postseason by hosting a MAC Commonwealth semifinal as the No. 2 seed, hosting No. 3 seed Widener (19-6 overall, 10-6 MAC Commonwealth) at 7 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
 
Painter notched 22 points, hitting 8-of-14 from the field, to go with two steals and a block. Kline posted 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Junior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) added 16 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks and sophomore Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) posted eight points, a game-high 13 rebounds and four blocks.
 
Down by 17 points late in the third quarter, the Warriors gained momentum by scoring the last five points of the period to enter the fourth quarter down, 56-45. Lycoming kept the momentum early in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 straight points, with the last two buckets coming in transition from McFadden and Kline to make it 56-55 with 7:55 left.
 
Widener responded, though, with nine straight points to lead 65-55 with 4:06 left. Lycoming began to cut into the lead from there, with Painter scoring back to back buckets to make it 65-61, with 50 seconds left. After neither team could capitalize on their next two possessions, McFadden drilled a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left. Lycoming fouled and Devin Rimmer hit the back end of her free throws to make it 66-64. Lycoming turned the ball over on the inbounds on the next possession and Nicole Barnes hit both free throws to make it 68-64. Painter hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make up the final margin.
 
In the first half, Widener held Lycoming to 36 percent while shooting 44 percent (14-of-32), as they forced Lycoming into 10 turnovers, which led to nine points and eight in transition. Devan Rimmer posted 14 points in the first 20 minutes to lead the Pride, while Lycoming was led by eight from Kline and seven from McFadden. Widener continued to expand the lead early in the third quarter, taking a 52-35 lead with 3:23 left.
 
Rimmer led the Pride with 23 points and Erin Phelan posted 13 points and six rebounds. Kyra Schenk posted 12 points and four assists and Madison Ireland added eight dimes.
