Warriors drop close one to River Hawks

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore Dominic Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) and senior Andy Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) had fourth-quarter goals that gave the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team a two-goal lead, but Susquehanna University scored three unanswered to edge out Lycoming, 9-8, in both team's season openers on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Sassafras Field.

Senior Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) kept Lycoming (0-1 overall) in the game, making 19 saves off 45 Susquehanna shots.

Ream led the Warriors (0-1 overall) with two goals and two assists, as Massaro and junior Shain Quigley (Lincoln University, Pa./Oxford Area) also each added two goals. In his debut, freshman Justin Joseph (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) won 9-of-10 faceoffs and grabbed seven groundballs and junior Max Crumlich (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) won 6-of-9. Senior Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) added a goal and five groundballs and senior Eric Schutta (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) also added five groundballs.

In a back-and-forth game that featured six ties and three lead changes, neither team was able to get more than a two-goal lead. Susquehanna (1-0 overall) held a 5-3 lead at the break after back-to-back goals from Colton Dick and Kyle Watts.

The Warriors responded with the first three goals of the second half, with Quigley starting the run with a man-up goal and Ream finishing it with a man-down one to make it 6-5 with 2:17 left in the period. Susquehanna tied it right before the end of the period, but Lycoming continued to roll, with junior Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) finding Massaro for a go-ahead goal with 13:43 left and Ream scoring unassisted less than two minutes later to make it 8-6.

The River Hawks responded, though, as Watts scored with 10:01 left and Dick tied it with 5:08 left. Tyler Humphrey scored the game-winner with 3:33 left.

Watts led Susquehanna with three goals and Dick added two goals and an assist. James Abramo posted three groundballs and five caused turnovers and Dan Murphy had six groundballs and three caused turnovers to lead the defense. Dylan Abplanalp posted seven saves to earn the win in net.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, Feb. 23, when they host Gwynedd Mercy at 12 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
