Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), junior
Drew Collins (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and sophomore
Dominick Massaro (Centereach, N.Y./Sachem North) each scored two goals to help the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team force overtime, but Gwynedd Mercy University scored a game-winning goal one minute and three seconds into overtime to escape the Shangraw Athletic Complex with a 8-7 victory on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 23, in non-conference action.
With the Warriors (0-2 overall) down 7-6 with just under two minutes remaining, freshman
Blake Premo (Massena, N.Y./Massena) threw a perfect pass to Ream, who fired a missile past the bottom right of the keeper to tie the game and send the game to overtime. However, Ryan Simpson scored a man-up goal just over a minute into overtime to earn the victory.
Ream notched two goals and two assists for the second straight game, also picking up a team-high six groundballs. Massaro attempted a team-high six shots and sophomore
Brandon Waden (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) scored his first goal of the season.
Gwynedd Mercy (2-0 overall) got on the board first, but the Warriors responded with goals from Massaro and Collins to earn their first lead of the game with 11:50 left in the first quarter. The Griffins knotted the game at two, the first of three ties, with 3:49 remaining in the period.
Lycoming's offense was red-hot over the game's next 22 minutes, scoring four of the game's next five goals to build a 6-3 lead with 55 seconds to go in the third. Gwynedd Mercy responded with four unanswered goals to regain the lead, 7-6, with 7:23 to go. Both teams went scoreless over the next five minutes before Ream sent the game into overtime.
Lycoming led in shots (37-32) and groundballs (38-33).
In net, senior
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall College H.S.) notched double-digit saves for the second straight game, recording 11 stops over 61 minutes. Aubron Swartley recorded 18 saves to earn the victory for Gwynedd Mercy.
The Griffins were led by a game-high four goals from Ryan Simpson. Jacob Dziergowski added three assists and a goal for four points.
The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. when they host 17
th-ranked Ithaca College at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
