Warriors roar past Golden Wolves in second half, 75-66

READING, Pa. – With a surge in the last 10 minutes, which included 10 points from freshman Dyson Harward (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), the Lycoming College men's basketball team rolled past Alvernia University, 75-66, in both teams' MAC Commonwealth opener at Jack McCloskey Court on Wednesday night, Dec. 4.
 
Harward finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, as he hit 7-of-14 from the floor to lead Lycoming, which improved to 7-1 for the third time in four years. Senior Ryan Hollis (Centreville, Md./Saints Peter & Paul) finished with 16 points and three rebounds and freshman Mo Terry (Severn, Md./Severn School) added 13 points and four rebounds.
 
The Warriors (7-1 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) shot 44 percent (27-of-61) and held the Golden Wolves (3-3 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) to 35 percent (20-of-57).
 
After Alvernia closed within two points at 54-52 with 10:37 left, the Warriors responded with a  7-1 run led by four points from Terry. Terry added another layup with 5:58 left to give Lycoming a 10-point lead before Alvernia cut to within four points off a 3-pointer from Avery Walker with 2:32 left. However, Hollis responded with an answer 3-pointer and Harward hit a layup with 36 seconds left to get the lead back to nine points with 36 seconds left. From there, Alvernia couldn't get closer than six, as Lycoming hit 3-of-4 at the free throw line in the final ticks.
 
In the first half, the Warriors hit 53 percent from the field and held the Golden Wolves to 32 percent, but the Wolves hit 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 11-of-15 at the free throw line to stay in the game and head into the locker room down four.
 
After Alvernia took a 7-4 lead in the game's first three minutes, Lycoming doubled up the opponent in the next 11:38, with a free throw from Terry the Warriors take a 30-19 lead. Hollis led the run with eight points and Harward added seven. The Golden Wolves finished the half on a 14-7 run, though, to make it 37-33 at the break.
 
Alvernia took the lead with a 7-2 run to start the half, with Justin Thomas hitting a 3-pointer to make it 40-39. Thomas hit two more 3-pointers to give Alvernia a one-point lead, but a layup from freshman Jon Marc Flores-Diaz (San Antonio, Texas/William Howard Taft) with 13:58 left gave Lycoming the lead and started a 5-0 run, setting up the Warriors' final run.
 
Junior D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) finished with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks and Flores-Diaz finished with six points and two blocks. Junior Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) added three assists.
 
Thomas finished with 23 points and nine rebounds and Keon Taylor notched 15 points, seven assists and four rebounds to lead Alvernia. Malik Green also added 10 points and five rebounds.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Dec. 7, when they head to Stevenson University for a 3 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
