READING, Pa. – Holding Albright College scoreless for the final 215 seconds, the Lycoming College women's basketball team overcame a two-point deficit and hit three free throws in the final 16 seconds to lift itself to a 53-50 MAC Commonwealth win on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, at the Bollman Center.
Â
Down by two points after a free throw from Gabby Boggs with 3:35 left, the Warriors (14-6 overall, 8-3 MAC Commonwealth) clamped down, forcing five missed shots from the Lions (10-10 overall, 5-6 MAC Commonwealth) and getting two turnovers as well in the final minutes, clamping down to comeback for the win.
Â
Freshman
Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) tied the game with 1:43 left, as Vuz ran the lane and put up a jumper that kissed the glass and fell through to make it 50-50. Lycoming forced two fruitless Lions' possessions and then took the lead when Vuz was fouled with 17 seconds left as she drove the lane again. She hit both of her free throws to make it 52-50. Albright's next chance came on a layup that just fell off the rim and into the arms of junior
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg), who was fouled and hit one of free throws.
Â
Albright had a chance to tie with a deep 3-pointer, but it fell off the rim and Lycoming was able to sweep the season series from the Lions for the first time since 2012-13.
Â
Kline led the Warriors with 11 points and three assists and senior
Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) added nine points and six rebounds. Junior
Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) also added nine points and two steals and sophomore
Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) posted seven points, 16 rebounds and a steal. Senior
Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) also added six points and four rebounds.
Â
Lycoming shot 38 percent from the field (20-of-53) and 65 percent from the free throw line (65 percent), while they held Albright to just 28 percent (19-of-68) from the field and 53 percent (9-of-17) at the line.
Â
The game featured six ties and 11 lead changes, with Lycoming taking its largest lead at five points at the end of the first quarter and Albright leading by eight with 3:45 left in the third quarter. After Lycoming took a 30-29 lead off a jumper by Kline to open the second half, Albright scored nine points over the next 5:30 to take a 39-31 lead. However, Painter hit an open 3-pointer and a steal by McFadden led to a quick bucket to make it 39-36 just 30 seconds later. McFadded added an old-fashioned 3-point play to tie it with 2:08 left in the period and Lyocming even took the lead with 1:29 left off a banked-in 3-pointer from senior
Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge).
Â
Lycoming took a 44-43 lead into the fourth quarter before Albright scored the first four points of the period. Lycoming came back, though, with Grove hitting a jumper and Lutz hitting a pair of free throws to take a 48-47 lead with 4:51 left. Albright scored the next three points, setting up Lycoming's finish.
Â
The Warriors came back from a 10-5 deficit in the first quarter with a 16-6 run, as freshman
Ryanna Lamoreaux (Montour Falls, N.Y./Watkins Glen) hit a layup at the buzzer. Albright responded by posting a 13-2 run to open the second quarter and take a 29-23 lead before the Warriors scored the last five points of the half to head into the break down just a point, 29-28.
Â
Gabby Boggs led the Lions with 14 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks and Dejah Terrell added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Â
The Warriors will head back to the Pretzel City on Wednesday, Jan. 30, when they head to Alvernia University for a 6 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
