READING, Pa. – Holding Alvernia University to just 20 percent shooting, the Lycoming College women's basketball team allowed its fewest points in a game since 2000 as it shot 42 percent from the field en route to a 58-32 MAC Commonwealth win at Jack McCloskey Court on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
Â
The win dropped Lycoming's magic number to earn a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship to two with any combination of wins by Lycoming or losses from Stevenson or Arcadia clinching a spot in the five-team postseason tournament.
Â
The Warriors (15-6 overall, 9-3 MAC Commonwealth) allowed Alvernia just 11 field goals on 56 opportunities, as the 32 points from the Golden Wolves were the fewest against the Warriors since Lycoming beat Cedar Crest, 83-28, on Feb. 14, 2000.
Â
Sophomore
Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) posted her eighth double-double of the season with 10 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three assists, as she became the fifth Warrior to reach 40 blocks in a season. Junior
Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added a team-best 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) added nine points and seven rebounds and freshman
Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) added nine points.
Â
Lycoming jumped out of the gate by going on a 10-3 run, led by four points from Lutz. After Alvernia scored the next five points, Lycoming closed the quarter with 13 straight points, taking a 23-8 lead into the second quarter. The Warriors were held without a field goal in the second quarter, scoring one point, but still headed into the third quarter with a 24-12 lead as the Golden Wolves scored four points and hit just two field goals in the period.
Â
After the slow second quarter, the Warriors were able to create some more separation in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Wolves, 9-2, to open the quarter, taking a 33-14 lead. Alvernia was able to cut the lead to 17 as the fourth quarter began. Late in the final period, Lycoming scored seven straight points, with the last of the points swishing through off a 3-pointer from senior
Shelby Schoonover (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) to take a 55-27 lead with 1:30 left. In the final seconds, Alvernia was able to cut that lead down to 26 before the final horn.
Â
Janelle Robinson led the Wolves with seven points and Julia Ewen added six. Dej'hanee McNeal led the team with six rebounds.
Â
The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they host Stevenson University at 1 p.m. in Lamade Gym in the first game of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
