Warriors fall to Dutchmen at buzzer

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) hooked in a put-back with 1.1 seconds left for the Lycoming College women's basketball team, but a jumper by Jen Eck as the horn sounded helped lift Lebanon Valley to a 70-69 MAC Commonwealth win at Lamade Gym on Wednesday night, Jan. 23.

Lutz finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors (13-6 overall, 7-3 MAC Commonwealth), as four players finished in double figures, and the team shot 44 percent (23-of-52) from the floor.

Lycoming held a 53-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter before the Flying Dutchmen (10-9 overall, 6-4 MAC Commonwealth) opened the fourth quarter on a 19-9 run to take a 63-62 lead with 4:04 left off a 3-pointer from Eck. As the clock ticked under three minutes, Lebanon Valley held a 66-64 lead, but senior Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:48 left to give Lycoming the lead back. Caroline Scarff countered with a layup with 1:18 left and after each team had fruitless possessions, the Warriors got the ball with 7.6 seconds left. Painter got the ball on the inbounds, drove the lane and floated a shot that landed in Lutz' hands, who calmly hit the baby hook.

With 1.1 on the clock, Lebanon Valley advanced the inbounds and Anne Lehr lofted a backcut pass over the defense and Eck swished a contested eight-footer as the buzzer sounded.

Junior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) posted 13 points and two assists, junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and freshman Kelly Vuz (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) posted a career-high 12 points to go with three assists.

Lebanon Valley scored the first 10 points of the game before the Warriors outscored it 34-15 the rest of the half, taking a 34-25 lead into the break. In the third quarter, the Warriors extended the lead to as many as 13 at 40-27 before the Flying Dutchmen were able to cut the deficit to seven before a pair of free throws helped Lycoming take a nine-point lead into the final period.

Lebanon Valley was led by 20 points and six rebounds from Scarff and 14 points and seven rebounds from Emily Mealey. Lehr posted 12 points, five assists and three steals and Eck added 12 points and four assists.

The Warriors get back on the court with a key MAC Commonwealth matchup at Albright College on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m.
