Garrett Huff (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) got the ball at the top of the box, sprinted straight to the left side of the crease, then circled the back of the net came to the right edge, dove and with his left hand flipped into the left corner of the net, giving the No. 4 seed Lycoming College men's lacrosse team a dramatic 6-5 triple overtime win over No. 5 Lebanon Valley College in the first round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Monday afternoon, April 30, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
After being down 5-1 in the third quarter, Lebanon Valley (9-8 overall) scored two goals in the third quarter and then added two Kevin Beaver goals in a 34-second span late in the fourth quarter to tie it with 3:00 left. In the final 3:00, neither team could manage a shot on goal, although Lebanon Valley took two shots and Lycoming one.
In the first two overtimes, Lebanon Valley keeper Cameron Epple made two saves and Lycoming (10-6 overall) warded off four Lebanon Valley shots, though none were on goal. Finally, in the third overtime, junior
Alex Artur (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) won his 11
th faceoff of the game with a hard-earned groundball before Lycoming called a timeout. With the ball back in play, the Warriors worked the edge before sophomore
Tyler Thompson (Napean, Ontario/Mother Teresa) passed high to Huff, who took off on his mad dash to give Lycoming a win in its first triple overtime game in program history.
The Warriors, who reached 10 wins for the first time since 2010, jumped out in the first quarter thanks to junior
Andrew Ream (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), who scored four straight goals to open the game, including a behind the head man-up goal with three seconds left in the opening quarter to make it 4-0. The Dutchmen added a goal in the second quarter before Thompson started the second half scoring with 11:40 left in the period, setting up the Dutchmen comeback.
Ream led the Warriors with four goals and five groundballs, Artur won 10-of-14 faceoffs, posted seven groundballs and caused two turnovers and junior
Cole Masterson (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) added four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Junior
Travis Rode (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) also had four of Lycoming's 36 groundballs and he caused a turnover.
Beaver led the Dutchmen with three goals, Coleman Wagner added five groundballs and four caused turnovers and Matt Torrence added seven groundballs and caused four turnovers.
Junior
Michael Tenant (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) (10-6) won his 10
th game of the year with an 11-save performance, while Cameron Epple stopped 13 shots in the loss for Lebanon Valley.
The Warriors were outshot 41-31, but won the battle of groundballs, 36-29. The Warriors also took advantage of the team's lone man-up opportunity and shutdown Lebanon Valley in four attempts.
